Chapter 1
It was summer time. Everything seemed real and alive to Fany and Jamie. They were high school students who were madly in love. Nothing seemed to be able to stop them from loving one another. They were happy with each other and the life they were living in. Their love was like the sun rising in the morning atmosphere; a new day to look up to. Everything around them was beautiful and lovely.
The two walked hand in hand a long the path of the street. It was night time, but there were street lights everywhere. Fany and Jamie walked as they talked about the many wonderful things that were going on.
Fany suddenly stopped and took Jamie’s hand. He held it as he looked at her.

“Jamie, life is so great with you in it. I don’t know how I would survive a day without you in it.” Fany was about to continue what he had to say, but Jamie interrupted him.
“Fany, do you believe in ‘forever’?” Jamie asked with seriousness in her voice.
“Yes. I believe that if you truly love someone, you will stay true to that person forever.” Fany replied as he looked at her, giving her the hint that she was the ‘person’.
“As much as I wish forever exist, I don’t think that it does.” Jamie said as she thought about what she had just said.
“You don’t believe in living forever with me?” asked Fany who did not completely understood what Jamie said.
“What is she trying to say?” Thought Fany. He had a disappointed expression on his face. Jamie noticed this and immediately said. “Of course I want to live forever with you. The only problem is that we’re human. We all die. If we die, then how are we going to live together forever?” She lied.
Jamie didn’t want Fany to be sad by the words she had said. She didn’t believe in the word ‘forever’.

Her grandmother told her that her father and mother once were madly in love like Fany and her. They both loved each other so much that they could even die for one another, or at least that was what the people around them thought. Grandma even told Jamie that she and Fany reminded her of her parents. Jamie’s parent got married, of course. That was how Jamie came to existence in this world. Their life was great until one day, her father decided to go to
America for a long business trip. Jamie was four at that time, and could not completely remember, but that decision her father made, changed her life.

--- Flash Back ---

Mr. and Mrs. Park, along with little Jamie was standing inside the airport. Mr. Park had three huge suit cases which was about to be sent in the airplane. The three looked like any ordinary family; a mother, a father, and a daughter. They seemed happy; though one person was going to leave. They were exactly how they looked. Jamie’s family was an average Korean family. They were not poor, but also not rich. They were a happy family, without a care for anything around them but themselves.

“Take care of yourself and our child. I’ll be back as soon as I can, and we can continue living as we were” said Mr. Park.

“Take care of yourself too. Make sure to call me and Jamie whenever you can.” Mrs. Park said as she looked into her husband’s eyes.

“I will, don’t worry about me. I’ll come back and live forever with you and Jamie.” Mr. Park smiled at his wife. He looked at her carefully, for he knew that it would be a long time before he will see his wife’s face again. With that, Mrs. Park was assured. She didn’t want her husband to go, but she still supported him. She wasn’t selfish. She didn’t want to hold him back just because of her.
They hugged each other tightly, and then let go. Mr. Park walked toward the door that led to the plane. He looked back at his wife and daughter, and waved at them. Mrs. Park and Jamie immediately waved back.

“I love you daddy!” Jamie yelled as she blew a kiss to her father.
“I love you too my little girl!” Mr. Park shouted back to his daughter. He looked at his wife and smiled for once more.
That was the last time Jamie saw his father’s face. His face was no longer vivid in her mind, but she still remembered his sincere look that day, telling her that he would return.
After three years of leaving
Korea, Mr. Park never returned. For the first two years, Mr. Park still had contact with his family. He would occasionally call home and tell Jamie and his wife how much he missed them and wanted to be home with them. As the first year went by, Jamie received fewer calls from her father.

“Daddy, why don’t you call me more often like you used to?” asked little Jamie while holding the phone.
“Daddy is busy. Jamie, can you tell daddy that you love me once more?” asked Mr. Park.
“Daddy, I love you!” Jamie shouted loudly onto the phone.
“That’s my girl! I love you too Jamie.” Mr. Park said with a smile. “Can I talk to mommy?”
“Mommy is in the shower. Should I tell her to hurry up so she can talk to you?” asked Jamie.
“No, that’s alright. Just tell mommy that I love her a lot! She and you will always be in my heart. I have to go now my little girl.” said Mr. Park. He sounded like he was in a rush.
“Okay, daddy. I will” said little Jamie.
“Bye sweetie…” said Mr. Park. He immediately hung up the phone before Jamie had the chance to say good bye.

That was the last phone call Jamie received from her dad. Years after years, she waited and waited for his call. At the age of twelve, Jamie began to accept the fact that her father might never return.

One day, Jamie came up to her mother and asked her. “Mom, I know that dad won’t be returning, but I just want to know… Why did he leave us?”

As Jamie asked that question, tears began to pour out of Mrs. Park’s eyes. Jamie regretted what she said because she didn’t want her mom to be sad because of her dumb question.

“I don’t know.” Jamie’s mom finally answered. “Maybe he found a better life in
America. Maybe he found a better family.” Seeing her mom cry like that, Jamie could not stand it. She came up to her mom, and they hugged each other for comfort.

Jamie felt concerned about her mom. Ever since her dad had left, Mrs. Park did not eat and sleep well. She became skinnier and gray hairs were beginning replace her once soft, silky, black hair.

The fourth year after Jamie’s father had left, Mrs. Park became very sick. Jamie became concerned. She was scared that her mom would leave her. She was only thirteen, and couldn’t possibly survive on her own.

As days goes by, her mother’s condition worsened, until one day… she slipped away from this world. Jamie realized that her greatest fear had come true. She was scared and sad.
Mr. and Mrs. Hwang adopted her after her mother’s death. They were nice people. They had a son named Fany, who happened to be Jamie’s boy friend right now.
