see if you boss is such an ass then you should make sure you have a written documentation to quit. and maybe even copy one for yourself if he's really an ass. as for the letter of reference... if you were ok to him then i see no reason for him not writing you a nice letter. do you really need one from him? how long have you been working there for? anyways... if he say's no then you should ask him why.
