When you have a "conversation" with someone over e-mail and at the end all you have to say is "thanks" do you send it?
'Cause I've been e-mailing my profs at university and when they have answered my question all I have left to say is "thanks!" and I can't think of anything else to add....
But I know that some people hate it when they have to load and open up their e-mail just to get a one word reply....
Then again it seems rude not to say thanks....
What do you do? =]

i would email thanks to them:) because if i were them i would feel happy and think "what a polite and well mannered student"

I agree with sw33tsmile3s. For me at work, it's nice to receive an email even if it's just a one-word of "thanks". I feel that I've actually helped the person. Your professor(s) may feel the same way too.

if you want maybe you can include your "thanks for your time" in the email that you sent with the question.

^That's what I do most of the time and that's why sometimes i feel that i shouldn't send another e-mail just to say thanks?? =T

i was msging my managers at pne and i was wondering if i should do it or not
and i did
but i think that they'd think its spam instead of going oh, shes a polite girl

excellent thread!! i've wondered about this, too. i always say thanks at the end of my email with the qst and i think about sending the one worded thanks afterwards, but i never do, cuz it's always seemed sort of awkward. but it's great hearing your opinions here and i think maybe i should just send that brief email the next time the ocassion arises. it is a nice gesture, after all. wouldn't hurt.

Saying thanks to a friend or family member is fine, but I wouldn't suggest doing it to a professor. They are very busy people who might not appreciate a bunch of e-mails with no important content. I'd skip the thank-you this time.

i would just say "thanks in advance" in your first email, that way you don't have to send a second one word email.

I've been e-mailing my profs too and I kinda stopped sending "thanks" after awhile b/c you won't believe how much stuff is already in a professor's e-mail.

That is always a good idea.
