let's talk PERMS

Hi girlies! I have a ton of questions about perms so I'm just gonna ask away.

Has anyone ever gotten a loose perm done before?
If so, where did you go for it?
How did it turn out? Were you happy with the results?
What kind of maintenance do you have to do?

I'm just really curious since I've been wanting a perm for the longest time. I currently have an appointment at chura on the 30th but I'm still hesitant to go through with it. I've had super straight hair all my life and I don't want to end up like a frizz ball.

Please share your experiences! I'm also looking for a picture of a loose perm or wavy hair since I don't have one to show my hair dresser yet. Please post a picture of your perm or of anyone elses that you find. Thanks so much! Any help is greatly appreciated =)

Hey! I had my hair permed last year.. I think end of May or beg. of June (forget which).
I don't know if it's considered a loose perm, but it was the kind where my hair was wrapped up in those curlers all the way to the roots, brushed with chemicals and put under the hot air thingy. The usual I think!
I went to a place called Juno (near Lougheed Mall), it was a Korean lady that did it.

I think my perm turned out pretty good, I loved it!
Depending on how I let it dry it could be ringlet curls(wrap damp hair around finger and slip your finger away, then don't TOUCH at all) or waves.
Maintenance... hmm I didn't/don't(because my hair is growing out--but still wavy middle to ends) have to do much with it! I usually use Pantene Pro-V shampoo/conditioner for curls/waves/perms and then scrunch or finger wave my damp hair afterwards with the Pantene Pro-V curling shaper Anti-Frizz creme or LaCoupe's curling mousse.

But a bit on my hair background.. I have naturally straight hair thats not too thick/thin. I haven't bleached my hair the last few years, and maybe have only dyed it at most twice to pitch black. I would straighten my hair with a straightening iron most days.. so my hair wasn't TOO damaged to begin with. So.. if you've bleached your hair recently I wouldn't recommend perming at all!

IMO it's easier to straighten my hair(with a perm) than to curl it(when I had straight hair).. and I feel like it's less work too. Most days I don't use curl enhancing products anymore, so my hair dries straight near the top and loose waves at the bottom.

Anyway I attached two pics : 1st one is last July, about a month after I got my perm. 2nd is just from a few days ago actually!

oops. the pics are the other way around -- the 1st one is the NOW pic, the 2nd (with cell phone) is from last year

Re: let's talk PERMS

thanks!
I think my hair was mid chest area when I permed it. So maybe 4-5 inches past the collarbone?
lol it almost seems like I've had the same length, but my hair is way longer in the back now, I just keep the front shorter and layered.

Re: let's talk PERMS

About a year ago, I had my hair permed at Zeal and I wish I never did. My hair was so damaged and the maintenance for it so much work. I probably ended up losing at least 4-5 inches of hair in breakage. I would rather use a curling iron every day than to perm my hair again. The 15 minutes it takes to curl my hair now was nothing compare to the amount of time i spent taking care of my perm and it's much less damaging. My hair pretty much looked like kayyle's.

Re: let's talk PERMS

I'm not sure why, but I haven't read much positive feedback on getting perms.
I know 3 people personally that have had perms with long hair -- 2 of which they loved & would do again, 1 that turned out very frizzy and damaged. The 2 that turned out good haven't previously done major dye jobs or bleaching, so they had relatively healthy hair to begin with. The one that didn't turn out so great had bleached/dyed their hair within the last 12 months.
So my guess is that the damaged/fried/frizzy results result from hair being already damaged.

Re: let's talk PERMS

if it's your first time getting a perm, there are chances that it won't turn out. also, if you go to a cheap and unprofessional places, they use unprofessional products which causes more damage and frizz.
