Washing Black Clothing

Sorry, I don't know where else to put this.

I washed my new jacket (made with 100% acrylic) and after it dried I saw a LOT of dust all over it. There's also some dust on my black tank top =T Before, I've noticed some dust on my black shirts and stuff but there wasn't that much! My mom said I should hand wash it from now on, but I'm scared I wouldn't be able to clean it properly if I hand washed it.

The washing instructions say to wash it with similar colours in cold water. Should I try and just rewash it? Do you think the dust will go away? My mom said to soak it in water and the dust will go away but I'm not too sure about that?

Help please~

Re: Washing Black Clothing

use a lint remover. the sticky stuff that you roll over your clothes and lint/dust sticks to it. you can get it from supermarkets and even dollar stores

it works great!

Ooo okay =] Do you think I can get it at super store or one of the dollar stores (probably the dollar daze...) at Metrotown?

Re: Washing Black Clothing

Yeah, lint rollers/brushes will take them off. They're great and inexpensive.
You can avoid lint by washing your black clothes with other dark-coloured clothing, and putting them in the dryer (the dryer removes some of the lint).

Re: Washing Black Clothing

Firstly, the reason why your black clothing is inundated with lint is because you most likely mixed your black clothing with light-colored clothing in the washing machine. Wash dark clothing seperately from light-colored clothing and the lint problem will stop. Please note that for some particular types of clothing, the lint may be impossible to remove. I accidentally washed my black Ralph Lauren Polo tshirt with light-colored clothing once and the lint was impossible to remove so I had to discard the tshirt altogether.

I was thinking this, but it could also be dark towels or terry cloth fabric. They will leave behind a nasty mess.

Re: Washing Black Clothing

Here's how I keep my black clothes lint free. With most of my clothes I wash them inside out and if there is a zipper, zip it up since this keeps your clothes from pilling. I use liquid detergent now instead of the powder, just because I find that the powder sometimes doesn't dissolve all the way and can stick to your clothes. Wash all dark clothes together and make sure you don't have tissues or whatnot in the pockets of your clothes/pants. And if you still get some lint, just use a lint roller. At costco they have a big 5 pack of 3M lint rollers for $10.

You can just wash your jacket seperately and just put the load on small.

If you do handwash, it'll probably eliminate lint/dust, but just make sure someone helps you wring out the jacket because I find it hard to get most of the water out myself. AND do rinse out a couple of times so that you get all the detergent out.

Goodluck, I know it can be such a hassle when this happens to your clothes, it's happened to me before and I have lots of black clothes.

Re: Washing Black Clothing

u should do 2 loads of laundry:

wash black coloured clothing with coloured clothing and use liquid detergent in the washing machine.

then u should wash white coloured clothing with powder detergent.

this works for me. i have no lint on my black clothing

Re: Washing Black Clothing

tips for keeping black color from fading after wash:

* When you wash them - don't dry them in a machine, hang them to dry, they stay dark much longer.

* Wash with cold water

* Before the first time you wash a new clothing item, presoak it in a vinegar solution. Take 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 gallon of cold water & soak the item. Let dry naturally and then launder as usual. The vinegar solution somehow locks the color and there is significantly less fading than normal.

* Add a thimble full of white vinegar to your wash. It'll preserve the color and it WON'T make your laundry smell sour/acidic. Just be sure to pair it w/the normal detergent u use.

* Wash them with detergent that does not have bleach in it.

Re: Washing Black Clothing

It could be just that certain piece of clothing that does that. Just wash it separately next time. creme fraiche said use detergent that is meant for dark clothing. I personally found that the detergent made a big difference in keeping the black in clothing. the black doesn't fade after washes
