Tips on Getting A Job!

Hey everyone!

I thought I'd create this thread because it can be stressful getting a job, so let's help each other out and post job tips here!

Tip from me:

Don't pick your nose, shake your leg, or show any bad habbits while you're waiting to be interviewed.... someone might be watching you and taking notes!!

eg: the secretary

Re: Tips on Getting A Job!

when your going into a store to get the application, go alone. dont have friends tagging along. cause if you go alone, it shows them that your independent. also, if your friends tag alongs it seems like your just handing your resume to every store and looks like your going shopping than looking for a job. if you handing your resume, give it to the manager not the workers there.

dont cross your arms or legs in an interview, it makes you look unfriendly and unproffesional, i remember remembering this during an interview and purposely uncrossed my legs lol

Take a look at your extra-curricular activities and use them to your advantage. E.g. Do you do a lot of sports - this shows you are dedicated, hard-working, and motivated. Sometimes you will have to start with the no requirements jobs though so don't get frustrated!

Re: Tips on Getting A Job!

I've done three interviews in my life and I've been either hired on the spot or called less than 1hr after I left to notify that an offer of employment will be sent to me by courier the next day, some tips:

1. Do some research on the company online or through friends (industry, accomplishments, motto, most valued trait i.e. customer service, etc.) Have a personalized cover letter...a GOOD one, let it do most of the convincing for you...just make sure you memorized what you said in your cover letter AND resume so you can back it up during the interview.

2. Keep resume under 2 pages. Bring with you at least 2 extra copies of your resume and list of references. (In case they lose it or more than one person interviews you.)

3. Schedule an interview between 10-11:30am or 1:30-3pm, if possible.

4. Don't show up late, or too early. Show up 5 minutes early, announce to the receptionist that you're there for your interview but ask to use the washroom first before notifying your interviewer (make yourself presentable in the washroom!).

5. This is a really weird trick...but while you're in a stall...stretch your face by (pretend) saying AAAAAH...EEEEEEH....OOOOOOO as exagerrated as you can. It stretches and relaxes your face muscles so your expression is...softer and more demure, and therefore welcoming (nothing worse than faking a smile while you're nervous, with this, it'll look more natural). I shit you not...

6. Once you're seated and if they ask you if you want anything to drink, say "Just water please." (If you refuse it's a little rude, if you request anything that requires preparation...it's just fussy. Plus if need to think, take a quick sip!)

7. As soon as you sit down, take out a notepad and pen. All interviews are two-way conversations, after all (they're asking you questions to see if you fit in their ideal, and you're also interviewing them to see if it's a job you'd actually like). Take notes so you can ask questions at the end. ALWAYS ask at least 2 questions, if you can't think of anything ask things such as: Can you please describe to me a typical work day for the position I'm applying for? Can you please describe to me the working environment for the position I'm applying for? Do you mind giving me a brief tour of the office? What is the dress code (if not obvious)? etc. etc. etc.

8. Regardless of what happens or how the interview turned out, drop off a Thank you card the next day thanking them for their time and the opportunity. DO NOT CALL TO THANK THEM AND/OR FOLLOW UP (unless they flew you in from another province/country...but those are rare)...it's a major turn-off.

Goodluck!

Re: Tips on Getting A Job!

Another important one is to dress appropriately. For example, if you are going for a warehouse/driving job, you don't need to wear a suit, but do look presentable.
