Re: working at a Library

I don't know about public library but right now i'm working for my school's library. it's pRetty easy haha i process the books by putting metal stripes, stamp, plastic covers, stickers, and then checkk books in and out haha it's simplee thinggs and its not difficult to doo haha but it tends to be boring sincee u do some things over and over again.

goodluCkk!

Re: working at a Library

I work for the Surrey Public Library, and i started at 12.90/hour and now i'm moving up to the next position which is like 18$ an hour. and i only work 8 hours a week set schedule. so i dont have to worry about my weekends or any thing, i work tuesday and wednesday nights and theres always shifts that need to be filled so if i want some extra hours i can pick them up if and when i please. its a GREAT job.

Re: working at a Library

well if you work for a city library, they are union. so they pay reasonable wages. but these are definitely not livable wages. they are just good for students and part time work.

Re: working at a Library

it's not fair that people are allow to get a job just b/c of connection. Doesn't everyone have equal rights? Is plain stupid that those people get special priviledge. It totally wipes out equal consideration. Ironically, most big companies even union based companies allow such unmoral treatment.

You know most jobs are filled through connections .. it's sad but it's true so that's why it's good to build up your network.

Re: working at a Library

The only reason people get hired thru connections is because the people who work at the company know there is an opening and they can tell people they know who are looking for jobs, so it's more likely for you to find a job where you know someone then by looking in the paper.

and secondly it has nothign to do with "human rights". everyone has equal oppurtunities to get hired anywhere. however if someone at the company ( in this case the library) knows you (the applicant) it can be an advantage because they can be a reference for you. and they put their own job on the line by doing that. you dont get jobs just by who you know. you get them by getting your resume out there, making good connections at the jobs you have had, so your references are good and just being a pleasing person to work with, because no one wants to work with somenoe who is bitter

i didnt get my job thru connections. ive never known anyone else who works at a library. i just applied online and they called me a few months later when they were looking to hire. almost all companies hold resumes for 3 months, so even if a place isn't hiring right now, if its somewhere you'd really like to work you need to put your resume in, because they could be hiring in a few weeks or months. also many companies, like the library, don't advertise theyre job openings very often, they get enough resumes from people who really want to work there that they use those to find applicants.
