fat even if you're small

I'm not too sure if it belongs in this forum or the health and fitness one.

Anyways, I am a size 24 in jeans at Guess and I am about 5'1 or 5'2 and 115lbs. I usually wear small size clothing as well too.

When I went shopping i tried on those kind of summery dresses that you dont wear anything underneath. Uusally they are a bit above the knee. But whenever I looked in the mirror I always feel that I look stubby and my legs look horribe. I can never wear a dress without something underneath (ie. leggings)

Does anyone else have the same problem? Any suggestions? I was thinking that maybe those high top sandals would make it look a bit better. I don't think it's because I am fat, but it sure makes me look that way...

I feel my legs looks like a chicken drumstick!

Re: fat even if you're small

i'm the same way!!! i inherited laaarge, large calves from my dad so naturally, i can't wear knee-length dresses because it just highlights my legs and that's NOT what i want people to be focusing on.

it's probably the cut of the dress that's the problem. it can be a challenge finding which dress or what pieces of clothing suits your body and your style. but you're not the only one!

good to know i'm not the only one =) but seriously i cannot find one that fits good. I guess I don't know what to look for. Like does it have to be shorter so your legs look longer? or should it be longer so it covers the thick part?

Re: fat even if you're small

I'm on the same boat as you two too! I find that the shorter the dress, the longer your legs look. For me, I cannot wear anything below the knee. If it's right above the knee, the dress has to be fitted and not puffy, otherwise I'd look like a stump with puffs.

Re: fat even if you're small

Yeah I know, and it doesn't help when you're short either. All of the dresses I own are short and tight lol. But there are so many nice ones that I can't wear. Maybe long, fitted cocktail dresses would make you look taller and it covers the legs.

Re: fat even if you're small

You sound about my size. I'm a 25 in jeans and I'm 5'1 and a half...and I'm about 5 - 7 pounds lighter than you. You're not fat at all, what are you talking about? :)

As for dresses, I think just always opt for something that appears short. Long tops might work, too. And yes, black tights always slim your leg down...but it's almost spring hahaha.

Re: fat even if you're small

Dress right for your leg type

No matter what your leg shape, here's great advice on showing them off to maximum advantage!

The golden rule
There is a simple rule here that applies to all legs, whether they're long, short, fat or thin. Never and we mean NEVER cut a trouser or skirt through the fattest part of your leg. This means don't buy skirts, shorts or trousers that end mid thigh, mid knee or mid calf. Trust me, it will make you look fatter. Above or below the three mid points is the golden rule.

Short and thick legs
You'll find the simple things make all the difference. For starters make sure your tops don't reach past your hips, and that they don't end on your hips. This will only make you look shorter and wider. Check that the rise (the space between the crotch and the waistband) is not long or baggy, and try hipster trousers as they may fit better. Avoid baggy trousers since this often gives a boxy look. Do wear dark plain colours as this will give a slimming illusion and don't buy anything with horizontal lines. Skirts and crop trousers shouldn't be longer than below the knee. And of course, don't forget every girl's friend, the stiletto for adding instant height. If you can't walk in high heels, at least go for a kitten heel.

Long thick legs
Avoid capri pants as, these will make your legs look even longer and wider. Leggings are a no no. Bootleg and flared trousers will balance your proportions and a good pair of flat-fronted wide-legged trousers will look brilliant on your pins. Open-toe sandals and wedges will give a slimming effect and make sure the heel on your shoe isn't too delicate as this will fight against you. Look for more of a stacked or thicker heel. A-line skirts in big bold prints are still looking fresh so grab one now! Again, the obvious answer: wear dark colours on your lower half. But try to get some detail on them, perhaps some funky brooches on back pockets - just make sure they are big or they will be lost!

Different muscle to fat ratio. For instance, I'm 4'10" and size 25 (pretty tiny overall) but I'm 115lbs. It's just that I have a lot of muscle.

Re: fat even if you're small

Serious? I play tennis and have ample amounts of muscle... I don't like being size 27 pants... and skinnies never fit over my calves =S Summer dresses that go mid-calf, mid-knee, or down to the knees are so awful on petite people.
