help with topic!

Hey guys i need to write an article for my school paper and i am stuck on the brainstorming. The topic is how language and culture intersect. I need to think of a common word or a popular phrase and explain how it change the way people think and act.

any ideas of what words or phrases? Really need the help.thanks

Re: help with topic!

Did your teacher provide any examples? I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Like how people interpret the same word differently based on cultural bias?

Re: help with topic!

hm..not sure if im intrepreting yur question right. because it seems like a very broad question that could be intrepreted in many ways..

what about the word "HIV"? cuz there's a long history about it...in a simplistic nutshell.

culture: how it was first seen as a gay men's disease...cuz it occured in them first....
language: but politics got in the way and refused to admit to the science and they just relate it to poverty/gay ppl.

is that what u mean?

Re: help with topic!

mmm you can use the word "gay." some people think the word's evolved and it's okay to use it as an insult, while others believe people who use it are ignorant about the roots of the word. or you can use the n-word. a lot of people still think it shouldn't be used at all, but some rappers use it and some clothing lines have promoted it (featured on the tyra show) with a new positive meaning. is that kind of the direction of your article?

Re: help with topic!

That’s certainly a very interesting take! I think it should work just fine because the topic is quite abstract to begin with. Good luck.
