Help me pick a hair salon in Vancouver! / Japanese salons for Caucasian hair?
Hello!
I recently moved to Vancouver from Europe, and am in search for a new hair stylist / salon. I have short blonde Northern European/Caucasian straight hair, and am looking for somebody who could shape it into a cool bob, and potentially add some Japanese anime style funk to it. I'm used to the professional hair stylist having a 50-dollar tag for the full spiel (color+cut+style), so I am looking for a place that would do my roots, add some highlights and give me a nice fresh cut for under a 100CAD. I noticed a lot of talk about Asian vs. Caucasion hair and haircuts - is there really any difference between going to a Japanese stylist vs a random pro stylist, other than getting a cooler haircut with the former? Or are some of the products they use Asian-specific? Also, which salon would you personally recommend? Here is the list that I have assembled so far: ***Chura: http://www.chura-hair.com/#menu (604) 685-1006 Color and Cut 70.- 571 Howe St. ask for Masah (pronounce: ma-sa) or 413 West Hastings St. Vancouver, BC (604) 685-1006 ***Kaen Beauty Design Studio: Hair 37/60-70 http://www.kaenvancouver.com/hair.html ***john casablanca's ***N&T Hair & Skin Care School - 604-876-2922 738 Kingsway , Vancouver , BC V5V Their number is 604-876-2988 and I believe their address is 1090 Kingsway. ***ZEAL: 40/60 http://www.zealhair.com/ ***Misako (on Kingsway): http://www.misakohair.com/ |

They might not be able to cut European hair as they are mainly are used to Asian hair but I know the ones at Zeal go for more training. You need to ask if they can cut your hair when you call as they might not be all trained to cut Caucasian hair. There is a huge difference with the Japanese techniques as they do lots of layering and undercutting with the purpose of needing to use very little product. I was blown away at how different their techniques were compared to all the Caucasian stylists I had before.
Otherwise, you might try Mona at Markus J Hair on Broadway. She does some really incredible and creative stuff with Asian hair and I am sure she can do something for European hair too as her clientele is more varied than a Japanese salon as she is Canadian. But as she has won lots of hair competitions she is probably not going to be $100 for a cut and colour but she is in my top Five of hairstylists when I used to go to her. |

I made an appointment at Chura, but I won't be able to get in until the end of the month. So, after careful consideration and net-browsing, I booked a time at John Casablanca's -
I have a graduated bob that is slightly grown out and needs a color touchup, so that should be an easy fix for them ( I HOPE!:) ) I'll let you know how it goes. |

John Casablancas is very good. Not japanese but honestly..it's a very good salon so I'm not sure what ethnicity has to do with anything :p

Its not the ethincity but the techniques and the Japanese technique is very differernt. Its developed for Asian hair which is very different in texture and thickness. |

Re: Help me pick a hair salon in Vancouver! / Japanese salons for Caucasian hair?
***Attention***
If you have ANY hair colour other than BLACK...DO NOT go to Zeal salon on Robson. They do not know the first thing about NON-ASIAN hair colours, do not use proper toners (or no toner at all), and do a very amateurish poor job overall. Me and a few of my friends have had to get our hair colour FIXED at ANOTHER hair salon!!! When the "stylist" was confronted about the completely different hair colour than asked for (even though he emphatically said he could "definitely" do the specfic red and blonde colours for my friend and I), he got defensive and told us to "go somewhere else then". LOL that is his reaction after failing to deliver what was promised. We went to another salon THAT SAME DAY and got exactly the hair colours we wanted! DO NOT GO TO ZEAL (if you have any hair colour other than black). They do NOT use proper chemicals (toner) and techniques. Once they saw the job that a few of the "stylists" at Zeal did they were shocked at what a poor job they did. So again, I'm warning any of you that have or want hair that is not black...DO NOT GO TO ZEAL ON ROBSON!!! |

Re: Help me pick a hair salon in Vancouver! / Japanese salons for Caucasian hair?
if you have a specific image of what you want, bring it to a hair salon and ask if they can do it. I usually go to asian hair-stylists as I'm asian myself and i've experienced extremely poor haircuts from caucasian hairstylists - they had not idea what layering was to start with (ex when i asked for layers, the lady cut of 2 inches straight across and charged me $35. she got really mad when i told her that wasn't layering) and they were not used to dealing with coaser asian hair. so i agree with Castafiore to an extent - you have to be careful around asian hair salons because their training might not include working on caucasian hair. but bring in the image and ask anyway - if you want more anime-ish hair, i'd still suggest going to an asian salon as they definately use waaay more techniques on your hair than caucasian salons.

Ask for Aki at Misako on Kingsway. They're not really busy like the downtown location and she's really good. (she's actually the manager at that location)

ethnicity doesn't matter at all....however, there is definitely a difference between asian hair and caucasian hair and some stylists may be better trained in working with one or the other.
