volunteering w/ homeless people

For some reason I really want to start volunteering. I won't be going to school in the summer and I probably won't be working much.

Does anyone know how to get involved volunteering with homeless people?
Anyone have any experience?

Please Post!

Btw... I have already spent numerous hours volunteering with children so maybe you guys can post other places or ways of doing it with: homeless people, elder people, etc...

Preferably somewhere where it is flexible because I do have a job. For example: early mornings, late evenings, or even weekends =)

Thanks so much!

if you wanna do the soup kitchen, there's the sisters of the atonement on cordova st. my exbf volunteered there a couple times when he was still in highschool. and i know that st james on powell st is hiring too. i think that position may be paid.

Re: volunteering w/ homeless people

I've volunteered at The Door Is Always Open on Cordova St (I think that's where it is, Google it lmao) with a group of people. We just brought in a lot of food, packaged it, put it in bags, and then handed them out to a line-up of homeless people in the eating hall they have there.

I'm a big fan of Covenant House. It's downtown as well, on Seymour and Davie (or thereabouts). It deals with a lot of street youth. I know they have clothing and shoes for homeless people that come in.

I think the way you get started is simply by calling up one of the organizations you feel passionate about. They are not going to turn you away!

Sisters of Atonement! They're so nice and friendly, I went for a day with my school. They're always looking for people to help them hand out food and run the free clothing store.. stuff like that.

Oooh!! That sounds pretty fun.

Are we allowed to register an entire group at once? Or would each person have to be registered individually?
