First Job
I'm graduating this year and I'm taking a year off so I am planning to get my first job but I don't know where to start. I wouldn't mind going out to like Surrey or Langley to work (live in Burnaby) but I really don't want the $6-8 minimum wage. Anyone have an idea where to start off, first of all then I'll worry about the wage later on.

Re: First Job
i think if it's your first job many places (in the mall) will hire you, but it will probably be around minimum wage. do you have any volunteer experience? because that will boost up your resume.

Re: First Job
Don't hope for high expectations on the wage. You build up in the work force by continuing your employment.

Re: First Job
I'm going to be looking for a new job too and I'm wondering about wages as well... I've had two jobs before, one paid me $8/hr and the one currently is paying 9/hr but I'll be leaving in August and I don't want a job that'll pay me less tha 9/hr... what are the chances that I'll get paid $9? =T

Re: First Job
well, what are you planning on doing education wise? you might want to look for a job that would relate to what you want to do later on in life. also, if you don't like it, it may not be the right field for you.

Re: First Job
when you say graduating, from highschool or post-secondary?
high-school u can aim for a starter retail job... post-secondary you can aim for office reception etc... but not matter what you gotta pay your dues before you get a higher paying job.. you just have to work your way up... and u have to think that considering you have no work experience and you are getting paid higher than minimum, u probably have to work damn hard because your boss would expect more from you since u are getting paid more.. i know alot of people that worked at superstore as their first job, easy job, good pay and benefits and you wanna work at a place you'll enjoy at least for a year or so... it never looks good on a resume when you work for a few months then quit... unless it was at playland, but then that's a different story... go look at craig's list, sometimes parents are looking for a tutor for elementary school kids.. that's a good first job if u are good w. kids |

Re: First Job
For a higher paying job, you should definitely try to find something in an office environment, like a doctor's or dentist. It might be tough if you have no previous work experience period.
Also, you might consider applying for a cashier position at some place like Superstore. I worked there when I was out of highschool and I am pretty sure they paid over minimum wage since such places are always looking for people b/c of high turnover. The other option is when you are applying for department stores like the Bay or Sears, consider inquiring about whether they have any positions open in their office. Also, the cosmetics counters at department stores usually pay more than minimum wage. You don't necessarily need experience. I'm sort of assuming you wear makeup or at least are pretty decent at it. :P Good luck on your search! |

Re: First Job
Are you looking for part-time or full-time jobs?
Since it's your first job, you shouldn't be so picky about wage to start off (unless you get lucky and find a good paying one that is)... this is your chance to gain experience in the working world so just apply everywhere you can think of and then move up from there and you'll find out what suites you the most. Fast food is probably the easiest place to get hired and I guess the only good thing about it is that you can move up extremely quickly, esp. if it's McDs. I heard Superstore pays pretty good as well. If you want to make good money for your first job, you'll probably have to find a job which requires a lot of hard labor (eg. warehouse job, gutting fish, etc.). Good luck!
