Re: Where to and where nOT to work!
Ok, I used to be either the Assistant Manager or the Manager for the following companies...
Sirens/Urban Planet Pacific Centre and Metro...yrs ago)-they will work you to death @ min. wage (they're the same company, if you didnt know and Stitches and Urban Behavior) La Senza (Richmond)-pretty good company to work for if you're just pt or ft and not part of management Nine West (Pacific Centre)-same as La Senza, pretty good company to work for if you're just pt or ft and not part of management Dynamite (Metro)-same as La Senza and Nine West I've known people who have worked for the following companies... Armani Exchange (Robson)-didnt actually work for them but was recruited by them and they seemed like a pretty good company to work for as well. I just decided to change fields all together, thats why I didnt go with them. Guess (Metro)-was recruited by them as well but they seemed VERY pressure sales, but overall seemed good...was going to go with them but ended up not working with them cause I got a raise after giving my employer at the time notice...lol. Aritzia (Robson)-very high pressure for sales and VERY strict on the discount, to a point where they will go search the management's residence to see if they actually bought the item for themselves or for a friend (so I've heard, so don't quote me on this one) La Senza Girl-same as La Senza Payless (Metro)-VERY bad company to work and VERY straining on you, physically, will work you to death for alittle more than minimum wage Aldo, Stoneridege, etc.-fine company if you're just doing sales Bebe-had a girlfriend manage the Metrotown one and she really liked it That's all I can think of right now, but if I remember anymore, I'll let you guys know...I hope this helps and good luck!!! |

CNE (similar to PNE) in Toronto
I heard it's a really bad job. You get paid minimum wage to stand outside in 30-degree weather, talking to little kids and fussy teenagers. They make you do clean-up, etc. too. La Senza, Bubble Tease (bubble tea store), Old Navy Heard it's a good job. Easy-going and not tiring. Garage Heard it's a horrible job, actually. |

Re: Where to and where nOT to work!
hey ceetee,
stick to white spot, especially during this time of yr...xmas it probably THE busiest time of the year for malls. hostessing is much better than having to deal with a customer on xmas eve at 5 mins. to closing, plus everyone's grumpy =) and plus EVERYBODY works on boxing day...so...if you like to shop, you can't get the day off in retail. oh, and remember the extended hours for the mall, metro's open til 11pm for a good 2 wks, i think in dec. yuck!!! i'd rather be at home with my family after 7pm during the holidays. i hope this helps make your decision. ps. the only tip you'll get in retail is someone screaming down your throat for not having something in their size...lol. |

i've had so many friends work at silvercity. and yeah, it's good at first b/c of the free movies but working there is like total shit. the floor is all sticky and greasy b/c of the pop and popcorn and i heard it's min. wage too. yuck! nike (robson and metro) is a good company to work for (i work there!). fun staff and it's laidback and chill but it takes FOREVER to get raises. they base your starting wage on how much experience you get. discounts are okay.... nothing too substantial. aldo (robson) was a good company to work for minus standing 8 hours in heels. the only good side was the discounts which were readily available to you when you start and the 1 hour breaks. taco del mar (new west) was a shit job. management sucked and it's min. wage. 'nuff said. good burritos and food though. cobs bread (new west) was a fun place to work! if you close, you get to take home as much food as you want. and it smells so wonderful when you work there. management there sucked too though and would change my shifts without notifying me first. eco outdoor sports (granville) was such a CHILL job! no uniform and sweet discounts after your probationary period (discounts off WHOLESALE). there were also yearly staff trips to whistler. -------- my friend worked at la vie en rose (metro) and liked it. it was super chill and good discounts too. my friend worked at costa blanca (metro) and she hated it. management sucked and was unreasonable with her hours, as she was going to school at the same time. |

Re: Where to and where nOT to work!
at toys r us, my friend got one of those mystery clients (or watever u call it!) where someone that works for them pretends to be a customer and asks you for assistance.. then they give you a mark out of 60 or something!! then they'll go and tell the manager . yeah.. she failed =( but she didn't get fired though.. just a LOT of advice =S

I wouldnt work at the Body Shop as they seem very high pressure now from when they first opened. I'm sure Loreal buying them did something to the whole sales quota thing. Every time I go in there I am hounded and I cant browse and got pressure to buy their discount card.

Re: Where to and where nOT to work!
I would say McDonald's is fun, but they work you at min wage. >.< i started at 6.50 there for 500 hours, killer eh, zellers is boring, and gap is the shittest place to work for which they still owe me money for orientation taht they didn't bother paying when i asked for it like 10 times. arrrghh. and then buffalo is alright, if your not part of management.

Re: Where to and where nOT to work!
I disagree with you there.. I worked for the Body shop for many years and I loved it!!! I worked at the metro location where is franchise not corporate and it was probably one of the most fun jobs i've ever had.. Loved the girls that worked there and had a blast... I did work there with the change-over and nothing changed staff wise... The Body shop is very big on customer service.. they want to make sure that every customer is getting what they want.. I like stores that actually help you.. not like some stores where you walk in and nobody says hi to you and no one is available to help you when you need it.
