Chinese wedding advice

Hi everyone. I'll be attending my close friend's Chinese wedding in 3 weeks and was wondering what is good for a wedding gift. I heard that it's appropriate to give "lucky" money in a red envelope as a wedding gift. Could someone please tell me what monetary amount is appropriate for lucky money for a close friend's wedding? Thanks in advance

Re: Chinese wedding advice

For a close friend you can give gifts or money...I think it should be more than 100 and less than 350 maybe. My dad gave his nephew 500-600, because he is older than him and the status maybe?

actually i think if you're a close friend you can give out lucky money..if not..there would always be a place where the reception people (usually the parents) take the money..and they write your name on a list with the amount of money you give

Re: Chinese wedding advice

money is probably the safest... unless they have a gift registry. Give whatever you can, if it's ur friend it shouldn't matter at all.

Re: Chinese wedding advice

The amount u should give depends on how close u r to this friend. If ur goin solo to the wedding then 200 is reasonable. And u may wanna top off the red envelope with a seperate gift like a necklace or bracelet.

Re: Chinese wedding advice

Hey Material Girl,

I think the giving of red enelopes at a wedding is ok (I believe the couple's only rule applys to New Year's only).

DO NOT GIVE A SET OF KNIVES!!!! Very bad luck.

Anything in sets of 4 is not good, and if you are giving money, do not give anything with a 4 in it (like $40 or $400).

I think in some regions, picture frames, clocks etc. are also bad luck.
