Re: good samaritan

this sunday i was trying to find a house address and after 20 minutes of mindless searching, some woman in a small compact car is at a stop sign and asks if she can trouble me for a favor..

she tells me her predicament - she's from Hope and she was buying somethings before she left for vancouver and forgot her wallet there, now she is in surrey (i am from vancouver) and her only friend in surrey is not answering her phone calls, she is almost out of gas and she promised her son who was with her that she would take him to science world.

I felt she was sincere enough so I said I could help so we went to the corner store a minute away and I pulled $40 out for her. that should have been enough for her considering all she wanted to do was get back to Hope, get her shit together and head back to Vancouver.

She said she'd compensate me for troubling me and I said it's fine (it's rare that you get an opportunity to help out a fellow human being like this) BUT the story is not over yet.

She gave me her number (250) 857 9452 her name is Mia and I gave her mine. She said she would make it into Vancouver later that day (somewhere between 4- 6ish) which was fine with me as I had a dinner back in Vancouver.

It's Tuesday today and she still hasn't called back. If she was sincere, the least she could do is called me back that sunday and told me it wasn't plausible for her to come back to vancouver.

I'm not going to call her back because I'm going to give her a chance to fix her own mess and besides, $40 is not a whole lot of money.

Anyway, if any of you know a Mia from Hope, tell her that I do not appreciate her lack of communication and her disregard for people trying to help her out.

Oh and she is probably 30 - 40 years of age, Caucasian, light brown hair (may have been dyed), about 5' 7", has a kid that is probably 12- 14 years old, and has really bad teeth.

Maybe I should have said no when I saw her teeth.

anyway,

that's my good Samaritan story.

if you consider the possibility of me losing $40 getting scammed then yes i suppose i did.

well regardless of what happens, what comes around goes around

as cliched as that sounds.

Re: good samaritan

once, a friend told me that she had given money to someone in a similar situation. they were visiting from out of town, ran out of money somehow, and needed some money to get back. she felt really sorry forry for this person and ended up going to the bank machine to withdraw $40 for this person. a few weeks later, she saw the exact same person telling the exact same story to someone else... when i first heard about this i was furious!

Re: good samaritan

good samaritans are not suppose to expect anything in return... (what i heard and saw on tv)

so i guess in retrospect... we shouldn't feel bad if someone doesn't say thank you or disregards our favor.

BUT! i do however get sometimes a bit pissed when they lie (not homeless or poor), or ask for something else, etc.... i guess i am not a good samaritan after all... ='/

Re: good samaritan

Have any of you guys seen this guy who dresses kinda like a bum in downtown robson area? His story is that He's not from here, can I get some money. And when people walk past him and ignore him, he starts swearing at them. I've seen this guy like twice. Pisses me off, cuz he's so rude, and obviously lying. If he's not from here, and lost, go to the cops. and get help there.

yah i agree...
sometimes you want to help out, but at the same time you can endanger yourself..

like couple nights ago i was driving out of UBC, and on this corner of the street i saw this lady sitting down on the curb holding to her leg, she looked like she was in pain.. and there was a man standing next to her... i thought about stopping and asking if thye need help..
but at the same time i was like it could be a trick... who know they could have a gun... or they could hi-jack my car... just all the senarios came into my head.. and i just didn't stop the car i just went on... it was dark, and i was by myself
i felt kinda bad afterwards

You shouldn't feel bad and you shouldn't have stopped. It would have been way too dangerous for you to stop. If they really needed help they could call 911 at a store nearby or a pay phone.
