New York - Must Do's?

Hey everyone,

I took a short trip to New York last summer (2 nights, 3 days type of deal) because I was in the area and realized that I had very minimal time to do everything that I wanted to do. Especially since one of the days was a Monday, and many museums are closed on that day. So as a result, I'm heading back there in approximately a month for a week this time around and was wondering if anybody had recommendations for must do's (see, eat etc!) from personal experience? I already bought the lonely planet NYC travel guide.

for shopping... : Century 21! .. soho, and greenwiche villlage ...
and park ave is great.

museum: the MET is absolutely awesome too.

haha, as much as I love shopping, I don't think I'll be doing too much of it simply because I just got back from Hong Kong! I will keep this in mind for another NY trip

Yeah a musical! I think my friends are going to see if they sell those 50% off tickets the day of or something? I think there are long queue lines for it though...

I definitely didn't get enough time at the MET last year, but we had lunch at one of the cafe's in the museum that overlooked Central Park and it was really nice :)

Ohhh, Century 21! I heard it's crazy in there, but you can find some awesome discounts on high end wear!

DEFINITELY see a musical! go see wicked or legally blonde... you won't regret it! but for those shows , you gotta book it in advanced because they're insanely popular.

you can get 50% off tix at tkts which is located right in the heart of times square. i'm not sure if they've finished renovating yet, but if they haven't, the box office should be located at the marriot hotel in times square. i went to see mamma mia last year and the tickets were $60.00 and i managed to get 4th row tickets, right off center. totally worth it! i was only in like for maybe... 2 hours or less? it's not bad because talking to people around you totally make the time pass by. keep in mind, tkts only caters to older or less popular musicals (ie. les miserables, hairspray, mamma mia, xanadu, etc)

how long are you staying there? places worth checking out:

if you want tourist attractions...
- broadway!
- empire state
- statue of liberty
- madame tussaud's wax museum
- rockafeller centre
- tour of NBC studios
- central park

if you have extra time...
- MoMA (museum of modern art) -- free admission on friday evenings
- coney island (amusement park)
- walk across the brooklyn bridge
- 24 hour ferry to staten island
- trump towers
- monday movie night at bryant park

food?
- carmines! huge ass portions -- you need 3-4 people to finish a meal
- STREET FOOD!! how can you say no?!
- nathan's (hot dogs)

shopping?
- SoHo
- anthropoligie
- 5th ave
- fashion district (check out the sample sales)

have fun! i absolutely love new york... definitely my kind of city.
