i'm not sure if my parents made this up so that id wear a helmet when i ride a bike when i was young, but

is it illegal not to wear a helmet when youre riding a bike?
they always used to tell me that ill get a fine if i dont wear a helmet whilst riding my bike.
so does anyone of you know if this is true?

Re: Question about riding bikes

I think that is a law to wear a helmet, and apparently your not allow to ride a bike on the sidewalk either, you have to ride along with the cars, on the road.

isn't it safer to ride on the sidewalk than on the streets. If you were to hit someone that person won't die, but if a car hits you, you would most likely die, if the hit was hard.

that's true. i think riding on the road would be so much mor edangerous for the cars on the road too, because if a car on the right lane was swerving away from a bicyclist, there's that chance that it can hit the car on the let lane...

does anyone know how much the fine is?

i honestly think if you are gonna ride a bike, wear a helmet no matter if there's a law or not.
I don't understand when ppl don't wear a helmet when riding, you are just endangering yourself,
head traumas can be fatal. no matter how well you can ride, accidents do happen, it might not be you that's at fault, but there's soo many stupid ppl out there that cause the accidents!
i'm just really upset because couple years ago i was driving down north road and this bus literally tried to force a teenage cyclist off the road because he was going to slow, the cyclist fell down, and almost got ran over by the bus! i got soo pissed off, i recored the bus license plate and reported it to the translink. i just thought it was ridiculous, and what was worst was after the cyclist fell, the bus driver opened his doors and started yelling at the guy.

Re: Question about riding bikes

i think it's a law, but it's not strictly enforced.. i have yet to hear of someone getting a ticket for not wearing a helmet.

Re: Question about riding bikes

In Ontario, "Cyclists under 18 are required by law to wear an approved bicycle helmet when riding a bike on a roadway or sidewalk in Ontario." But I was just thinking... what about people who wear religious headgear?

Re: Question about riding bikes

For one I think helmet law is ridiculous, it only gives motorist excuse not to drive more safely around cyclist.

Bikes are not allowed on the sidewalks, too dangerous to pedestrians. Both the helmet and sidewalk laws are rarely enforced.

Truth, people everywhere in the world ride their bikes quite safely without a helmet, North America is the only place in the world that uses helmet laws.

Example, a female cyclist in Copenhagen.

Banff, Alberta. Apparently this bike cost more than most used cars.

By all means, wear a helmet if you are inexperience in riding in traffic. Safe and reasonable riding provides far more security than a helmet could ever do.
