Sephora

Yesterday I went to Sephora and bought a small brush case for $20.52 after tax.

When I got my change back, I noticed that the side of the $5 bill was missing. At least 1/5 of it was missing! Not the side with the dashed rectangles (it was an older version that didn't have a silver stripe). (I probably sound really stupid but this made me frustrated).

So I proceeded to ask the cashier to exchange it for another $5 bill.
Me: Excuse me, this bill is ripped. Can you exchange it for another one?
Cashier: No. There's nothing wrong with it. It's still legal.
Me: How? A whole section of it is missing. I'm going to the bank to deposit money afterwards and I don't want to have to deal with any complications. Can you just exchange it?
Cashier: No. The reflective side is still there. You can still use it. The bank will accept it.
(etc., etc., more complaining and going around in circles, etc.)
He starts dealing with other customers while I'm still standing by the counter looking like an idiot.

After a few minutes, I lined up AGAIN.
Me: You know what? I'm just going to return this. You're wasting my time over a $5 bill that you can easily replace.
Cashier: Fine (with a smirk).

I think he was the store manager too. Either way, wouldn't he want a customer to walk away feeling content about their purchase and the Sephora store? It would've taken him 2 seconds to exchange my $5 with another one yet he completely REFUSED to do so, and even had the audacity to start IGNORING me and start scanning other customers' items. I should've starting yelling and making a big fuss (instead of lining up and waiting for the bastard). I'm actually glad I returned the item. If they don't want my business, fine, I'll just take it somewhere else.

Re: Sephora

wow...that sucks. i'm a cashier and i do come across a bill that is ripped...most of the time...maybe like 25% of it will be gone..my manager says the bank will still take it...(i'm not sure what happens if 50% of the bill is gone).

and when costumers don't want an ugly bill...whether a bit is missing..it is crimpled..i don't care..money is money and i'll give them the next one outta the pile outta my till...

i don't get what's wrong with the cashier at sephora...

Re: Sephora

actually the customer service at sephora isn't all that great. Once I asked them to show me foundation meeting certain criteria and etc, the manager just said 'can you find her some foundation' and gave that associate a WINK. I was like..what you think I'm going to purchase some really expensive ones? And then when I asked one associate can you show me xxx, they just asked some other person to do it. I don't get it. In the end I bought nothing they recommended.

Re: Sephora

^ Sephora's a make-up store. It's kind of like the make-up section in the Bay or Sears but there's no individual booths for each brand. I'm in Toronto but I think there's one in Vancouver (or will be).

Re: Sephora

I understand at some places where they can't open a till without a transaction, but if your working somewhere you can you're just making an ass of yourself and the company.

Re: Sephora

i actually took money out of the machine at my bank at like maybe 9 pm one night and when i looked at the twenty dollar bill, it was litterally only like 40% of the bill left. it made me so frustrated but i had to take it back to the bank the next day and they gave me a perfect an d crisp new bill :)
so i guess yeah as long as the reflective shiny thing is still on, it's fine. but with the service at sephora, that is actually ridiculous.
