Re: uggs

After hearing all the fuss about UGGS and hearing you all mention how great they are, I went out to hunt for a pair for my little sis a few days ago. They're more difficult to find than I thought (especially since my sis has small feet). After hunting and hunting, I finally managed to locate a pair in the TALL style. Damn they look pretty ugly and bulky. I really don't know why you all like them so much but I hope you all are right about these shoes and I hope she likes them

Re: uggs

Uggs on the A-List

They are so ugly, they are cute. They so comfortable, they are irresistible. And they are so popular in the United States that, unless you wear a size six or a size 10 shoe, you can hardly find a pair because all the sizes in between are always sold out.

We're talking about Uggs, the sheepskin boots originally worn by Australian surfers and now swaddling the pampered peds of Kate Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker and a host of other hot actresses.

Forget, for a moment, that stylish women are wearing knee-high, stiletto-heeled boots this season. The alternative statement is to glide around in simple, flat-heeled sheepskin-lined boots that look like something a cavewoman might have worn 10,000 years ago.

Barely into the boot season, Denver shoe-seller Louis Livaditis has shipped six pairs to a woman in Britain and has fielded between 50 and 75 calls a day at his shop, the Sheepskin Factory, which sells them for up to $US165.

Livaditis has about 100 pairs remaining for the season. "I wish I had 1000 pairs," Livaditis says. He has been selling Uggs for 15 years because, "Once a customer buys them, they are hooked. They are worth every penny. They are good-looking, comfortable and very warm".

The Ugg PR machine has also spent three years enticing A-listers to slip into sheepskin. "We have been doing celebrity seeding," says Karen Bromley, whose New York public relations company represents UGG Australia.

"What happens is that when you have a good product and people start wearing it, it becomes word-of-mouth and it spreads," Bromley says. "It was an undiscovered brand that was a surfer boot. Through a series of product placements, getting in magazines and being featured on shows such as Oprah. She loves them. The kids begin to catch on."

High school girls on the (US east and west) coasts are wearing them with miniskirts, Bromley says, adding that Uggs are now popular for summer and for cold weather. Ugg boots are thermostatic and comfortable even in extremes of temperature, according to the company.

"The sheepskin adjusts to your body," says Scott Meden, divisional merchandise manager for women's shoes at the upmarket retailer Nordstrom. He says the store is having trouble keeping up with demand.
Not bad for a product with humble beginnings 30 years ago in Australia, where surfers wanted something warm in which to wrap their feet after catching a few waves. They strapped sheepskin to their legs, creating "ugly boots", and the name was shortened to uggs. Californians now wear ugg boots in summer and winter.

In 1978, an Australian named Brian Smith went to New York in search of customers for his branded Ugg boots but didn't sell many until he introduced them to surfers in California.

Now they're worn around the world, and while they still have the connotation of being an Australian product, UGG Australia is owned by the publicly traded Deckers Outdoor Corporation of California. Deckers bought the brand in 1995, when 80 per cent of its sales were to Californians.

Today, 65 per cent of Uggs are sold in other states, says Connie Rishwain, president of UGG Australia.

The brand is projected to reach $US31 million in sales this year, after sales increased by 44 per cent in the third quarter that ended on September 30, compared with the same period last year.

As for wearing sheepskin in the summertime, Kate Hudson was far from the first. "In California, they have been doing that for years," says Rishwain. "Kids wear them with shorts. I get a kick out of it when I see people in the grocery store in Ugg slippers."
