perfect dress for every body

prom is coming and it's your cinderella moment to shine. what am I going to wear? Finding the perfect dress isn't a simple task. Everyone has different physiques. Here are some suggestions from the experts:

If your're Full-figured/Curvy

If you are a queen of curves, a halter-corset is a great style for you. You could try a belted A-line, halter-neck style. "The straps draw the eye upward and a belt highlights a trim waist." A v-neck will minimize bust size and an a-line skirt will draw attention away from your hips. Flowing dresses look gorgeous because they glide over your shapely figure in a flattering way. Gathering also minimixes the middle area. Choose a ball gown or something swwooshy to show off your curves on grad night.

If your're Petite

If you are vertically challenged, a small hemline is best. Princess-style puffy dresses only make you look shorter, so work a hemline that's the same circumference or less than your height. Don't worry about the lenght of the dress (as long as you dont trip) because trains look great on your figure and will created the illusion of height.

If you're very lean

Choose a strapless look. It shows off shoulders--practically everyone's best body part. A fitted waist and ruched bust add curves.

If you're a boyish figure/athletic

Mermaid dresses look incredible on athletically built or tall, lean ladies. Go with ewuins or ruffles on places you want to accentruate. Horizontal pleats and asymmetrical accents will give you sumptous curves in second. Ruched, beaded, and strapless gowns look fabulous on boyish-babes. Choose an ultrafeminine, flowing silhouette. "If you've been working out a lot, toned legs look fabulous in a midcalf-length dress,"

If you're tall

Pick a flowing, printed fabric. Women with model-length legs look amazing with flirtatious details like a ruffled hemline. Ditto prints: Your body can pull of bold motifs without looking as if the dress is wearing you.

Re: perfect dress for every body

Full Bust
Click the image to open in full size.
Balance a top-heavy figure by opting for the most flattering neckline for the full bust: the V-neck or plunging neckline. This dress features a flowing lace fabric and a fuller skirt to balance a fuller bust. Look for fabrics that skim, but aren't clingy or too stiff. Also, avoid ornate necklines, embellished bodices and blouson styles.

Small Bust
Click the image to open in full size.
Most clothing actually hangs better on women with smaller busts, but if you want to add more volume up top look for embellishment or ruffles on the bodice.

Big Hips and Thighs
Click the image to open in full size.
The easiest way to balance a bottom-heavy figure is to choose a dress that skims over the lower half of the body. This dress features a non-clingy fabric (tafetta) and a plunging halter to show off the face, shoulders and bust. The oversized bow works to draw attention up to the waist and away from hips and thighs.

Wide Shoulders
Click the image to open in full size.
You don't need to hide your upper body if you have wide shoulders. Instead, look for oversized details, like the giant waist bow on this BCBG dress to add balance. Avoid puffy sleeves or voluminous tops paired with slim bottoms that will exaggerate your shoulder width.

Flabby Arms
Click the image to open in full size.
You don't have to look matronly to cover up flabby arms. The trick is to keep the sexy element with a sheer sleeve, like this dress from Tadashi. Other ways to combat upper arm problems include wrapping on a shawl or using a bolero or shrug.

Thick Waist
Click the image to open in full size.

Disguise a thick waist by either raising or lowering the waistline. This two-fabric dress takes a raised waist approach and gets its flattery from the contrast fabric at the neckline. A drop-waist dress, which hits somewhere around the hipbones, is another good alternative for disguising a thick waist.

Too Thin
Click the image to open in full size.
If you're body lacks natural curves, add feminine presence with a bright color and bold pattern, like this dress from Vanitas. Extra details like full sleeves and a ruched waist add volume. Avoid clingy fabrics or bare styles that show off sharp hip or collar bones.

Unattractive Legs

Don't want to show off your legs? You can still look gorgeous in a dress, instead of hiding your legs in pants. Try wearing a longer skirt (midcalf or longer) paired with hosiery. This stretch velvet dress gives you extra coverage but plenty of sensual appeal through use of luxe color and fabric.

Plus Size

If your figure has too many curves, opt for a simple dress that adds sleekness and maximum flattery. An empire waistline visually raises the waist, like in this dress, giving you a longer, thinner look. Black is a great choice for looking thinner, and a longer-length slightly flared hemline adds to the svelte look.

Re: perfect dress for every body

Tips for petite statures:

Click the image to open in full size.Petites can wear a mini dress quite well. You won't lose your leg line, so you still look long and lean, despite your height. On a petite frame, be careful when it comes to a cute shift dress. They have less shape than a sheath, for example. Make sure the shape isn't so sack like that your frame gets drowned in fabric. And showing leg is important if you wear a mini dress because, without a defined body shape, you need to compensate with some visible skin in order to look sexy and proportionate.

Also, petites will have problems with the primary colors as well. They can make you look a bit childish when you are small to begin with. Metallics like brushed gold are another very big trend this season (both in clothing and accessories) and much more appropriate for a sophisticated look on a small frame. Remember, metallics are neutrals. They go with any color and they go with each other. You can mix all your metallics together!

Petite girls who wish to appear more elongated should try short skirts and capri pants. Avoid busy prints and cuffed pants, and try not to chop up the body with contrasting bold colors. Stay away from garments that are bulky or oversized, such as puffy bubble jackets.

What to Wear If You're Petite

Your Best PiecesClick the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.Time and again you've had the same problem: you find the perfect piece of clothing, but it was built for a 6-foot Amazon model. Ripples of fabric pool on the floor when you try on pants, skirts never hit your leg at quite the right place, and you have to continually fold up the arms of sweaters so you can see your hands. The obvious solution: start shopping in the petite section. All major department stores have sections full of clothes specifically designed to fit your proportions. At the very least, pick up a few petite-sized basics there: black pants, a tailored jacket, a coat that won't swallow you whole.

Overall, your shopping strategy is to look for pieces that elongate your whole frame. Monochromatic tones can help here: rather than breaking up your body into small pieces (short-waisted torso, short legs), a head-to-toe look in shades of dark brown or camel makes you look longer and leaner.

Can't Miss Pieces:

Long pants with heels You should have one pair of perfectly fitted pants with a hem that almost touches the ground when you wear heels. That way, no one can tell where your legs end and your shoes begin -- creating the illusion that you've got fabulous long legs.

Calf-length skirt and high boots Works on the same principle as the long pants. If the skirt and boot are the same color (black, brown, whatever), your lower body will appear taller.

Vertical lines You want the eye to be drawn upward when someone looks at you. So choose tops that have a vertical element. Subtle stripes, a zip-front jacket, even a long silk scarf that hangs along a jacket's lapels create this effect.

A shorter coat Stumble around in a long overcoat, and you'll look completely out of proportion. Instead, try coats that hit just below the hips. It'll show your legs and make your look more balanced.

Unflattering "Don'ts"
Big prints The bigger the pattern, the smaller you'll look in comparison. Go for smaller graphics, and wear prints on top rather than on pants and skirts to draw the eye upward.

Horizontal details Avoid anything that draws attention to the hem of your clothes (cuffs on pants, skirts that end with a ruffle). The effect is choppy, which makes you look smaller.

Sky-high heels You might think they make you look taller, but super-high heels on short legs look disproportionate. Don't go higher than three inches.

Big sweaters A loose top in a thick knit can swallow you up. Instead, go for more fitted shapes -- in petite sizes, please!

Ankle-length skirts If you want to wear a longer skirt, make sure you still reveal a few inches of leg at the bottom (or cover up with a high boot in a matching color).

Double-breasted coats They'll turn your upper half into one bulky, squat square. Not exactly flattering.
