Deciding What Faculty to Apply to At UBC

Hey guys, so I'm in grade 11 and I'm extremely confused as to what courses I should take next year. I know it's so early on already, however I'm a keener and will probably stress about it everyday through out this whole year. I have a wide array of interests, but still don't know what faculties to apply to. I wanted the opinions of my fellow Mallvibers as to how they feel about their faculty. I've narrowed it down to four: Sciences, Human Kinetics, Commerce, or Arts. I'm leaning towards Human Kinetics due to the fact that I want to pursue a career in Chiropractics, but then again I think about what else I'll be able to do with a degree in Human Kinetics. In Sciences, and Business I do have more options, although those two are the most competitive faculties at UBC as well. Any advice?

Take the very general all-around courses. Biology/chemistry/physics, (would not recommend all at once though) language 12 doesn't hurt to have either although it isn't needed .... calculus for sure ! there's also lit 12 or writing 12 tooo ! As for business courses, I don't know about your school, but my school's accounting 12/business 12 are horrible and useless.
PS, don't overload yourself, grade 12 is stressful enough ! ;)

^ Actually, all 3 sciences at once is not that bad.. it's the gr11 year you're supposed to stress out and work your ass off (build a foundation for grade 12).

If you're leaning more towards sciences, take more/advanced science courses (chemistry, biology, physics). I wouldn't do physics 12 if I were you unless you were going into engineering, which you're not.. so hehe, that's good, cus I've heard it's really hard.

Calculus is always good. If your school offers AP Calculus, take AB since UBC offers the same number of credits for AB/BC.. and BC is apparently harder than AP Calc AB.

I'm graduating soon as well haha, choosing courses/faculties to apply to is definitely stressful ><

i heard calculus is really hard, everyone here is complaining about how they dont get it
from what i know, calculus is not required for any of the faculties at sfu or ubc, i added the links so double check if you need to.
dont take a bunch of unnecessary and hard courses, it'll just bring your gpa down (scholarships, school awards)

Well if you're considering Arts do a Language 12 for sure. If you're interested in Human Kinetics, all three sciences would be good but biology is a plus for sure and chem will help you out for biochemistry. And for human kinetics, you can go into physiotherapy, education (PE), personal training, one of my friends decided to go ahead with Nursing, with his degree it's going to be a shorter program for him.

If you're planning to transfer out of Arts to another faculty during your second year, is a language 12 still a requirement?

    Re: Calculus

If you have high school calculus, then you can take Math 100, 102 or 104 (they're all equivalent, the applied examples are just geared towards different faculties). These are your typical 3 hours/week lectures.

If you DON'T have high school calculus, then you have to take Math 180 or 184 (once again, equivalent). This is a 3 hour/week lecture AND a 1.5hour/week tutorial/workshop.

All 5 math courses mentioned above are equivalent.
    ------------------------------
My subjective opinion: Take calculus in high school if you are confident that your other grades will be sufficient to obtain university entrance. Once you're in university, no one will care about your high school grades anymore. Your university transcript however, is stuck with you for life and calculus @ university is much more difficult.

Re: Deciding What Faculty to Apply to At UBC

HKin is the faculty with the highest average % for entrance (out of those 4, and it doesn't have a supplemental), im not saying it's the toughest to get in, but if you're aiming for it, your marks need to be really high.. it's one of the smallest undergrad faculties too.

if you're into sports and the science around it, go for it. i know a lot of people in it who are very athletic/ sporty
