starting nursing school in jan 2010!

So I finally got into nursing school next semester at langara and dont have to go to ubc anymore woot!...Anyone else in the nursing program at langara? Any tips? and how do you like the program? And I was wondering when do we actually go into the hospitals and meet the patients...because they're asking for alot of these tests to make sure that im healthy...its kind of annoying...

Re: starting nursing school in jan 2009!

I was in the program for the first sem. but it wasn't "for me" (forced to enter by my parents) so I switched to Business. First term is a breeze IF you don't have any other classes to take other than nursing ones. If you haven't taken english or bio beforehand you might have a hard time cuz you have to take them along with the nursing classes.

You get to "work" in a nursing home in second term. Your profs will ask everyone to pick the top 3 places they wanna be placed in (each term), but I remember that you can only "work" (clinical experience) in each hospital once. So if you live near a certain hospital I suggest saving that one for a harder term later on in the program. Oh and btw, for second term and onward, you get placed at different hospitals BUT you still pretty much have to be there at 6:30-6:45 AM everytime you have clinical.

A lot of my friends are in the program and trust me you REALLY have to like the program and be really determined to finish or else you'll get burned out and tired of it all by the end of the program's first year. I know a lot of people who drop out or can't keep up with the program... but mostly cuz it's not really wut they want as their career.

Oh and the profs are really nice so if you have questions like in class, make sure you ask them!! A lot of them are kinda vague about wut they want....

    Good luck!

LOL whoops...yaa 2010...its the end of the year it takes me awhile to swtich to the next year...tehe....

well my first choice would be bcit but you need like 40 credits or somehwere like that of post-secondary before you apply which is stupid because they make you wait...I tried to apply but they din consider looking at my applications because I din have enough credits but oh wells..langara is closer anyway even though i have to swtich buses..

as for ubc its even more competitive to get in...because alot of ppl end up going into med school which is stupid because thats totallly unfair for the ppl who are actually going to end up being a nurse...and uvic and kwantlen and langara (maybe douglous?) are all transferable with each other..they're like the same program...but waiting lists are a bummer...i applied for nursing langara the first day registration opened wen i was in highschool and they just called me last min that i was going to resgistered for the jan 2010 semester cuz someone dropped last min or else i would have started in the septemeber semester... i just want to get all this schooling over with...-.- asap

Re: starting nursing school in jan 2010!

im in second year of nursing school @ langara. they recently have a new policy (rather ridiculous): you can only skip 2 classes for each course...and if you skip more than that, you can get kicked out. plus, for some of the classes, if you're late, you're not allowed to come in until the break. first year was quite heavy and very exhausting b/c of the workload, but once you get through it, second year is much better :) and its not true that you can only do clinical work at one hospital once. i got placed at lions gate twice because it was so far from everyone else. but anyway, its a good program. hope you enjoy it :)

^ Do they still have the rule that if you fail one course you have to drop out for a certain amount of time, then be waitlisted again?

omgod its like highschool all over again taking attendence and getting death stares from teachers who know you were late/skipped...did you have to take english and bio along with your nursing courses in the first year?...and wen you mean 2nd year its like term 3 right? cuz theres like 3 semesters in a year how do they caculate their year levels?

yep. you have to re-do the course by itself and be on the wait-list for the following term. plus, if you fail 2 clinical (lab) classes, you are out of the program.

    ^ The rules suck. lol
Oh and they also evaluate you in the middle of the term and again at the end of the term.
