Vancouver fans of the reality TV show “Big Brother” will soon have the chance to audition to star on the first Canadian edition.

Shaw Media and Insight Productions announced early Monday a national casting call for “Big Brother Canada” will kick off on August 1, 2012.

Created by John de Mohl, the series first aired in the Netherlands in 1999 and has expanded to include editions in many different countries. The show documents the trials and tribulations of a group of 12-16 strangers while they live together in an isolated house for three months. Contestants face frequent evictions from the home, and are required to compete in tests – all with the goal of winning the final cash prize.

True to the U.S. format, Big Brother Canada will hand pick a diverse group of competitive contestants in the Big Brother house outfitted wall to wall with cameras and microphones to capture the house guests’ every move. Week to week the house guests compete in a series of challenges and vote each other out until one claims victory and takes home the grand prize. Fans of Big Brother can connect with the series outside of the 3-day-a-week broadcast through a myriad of digital extensions including live streaming and social engagement opportunities that allow online users to impact decisions in the house.
Vancouverites 19 years and older will have the option to apply online with a short video (at Please login or register to view links) and in-person on September 23, 2012.

“By offering applicants the option to apply online and in person, we’re ensuring that no matter where you live, everyone has an opportunity to apply,” Barbara Williams, senior vice president of content at Shaw Media, said.

Along with the Vancouver casting date, additional open casting calls will be held in the following cities on these dates:

    Calgary – September 30
    Halifax – October 7
    Montreal – October 7
    Toronto – October 14

The deadline to apply is October 16, 2012. The Canadian edition of “Big Brother” will debut on Slice on winter 2013.

Calling all … well, pretty much everybody. Big Brother Canada wants you.

Vancouver is the first casting stop for the Canadian series, which aims to start filming in early 2013 in a big house in Toronto.

“We want to get as many different Canadians from every walk of life,” said producer Emily Morgan.

“A range of different characters — extroverted, conformists, risk-takers, adventurers — we want all kinds.”

All ages, too, she said. What about nerdy introverts?

“Nerdy introverts are good, too. It comes down to putting an interesting group of characters together and then how they interact. That’s basically the show.”

Wannabes are invited to come to Vancouver’s Trade and Convention Centre at 8 a.m. Sunday, September 23rd for an open casting call. As well, hopefuls can apply online at slice.ca.

“I don’t think anybody should be anything other than themselves. This show isn’t skill-based, it’s about being yourself and being an interesting personality,” Morgan said.

Vancouver is the first of a series of cross-Canada casting stops. Contestants must be 19 or older as of Feb. 1, 2013.

Morgan will be in Vancouver with Hayden Moss, who won the 2010 edition of the U.S. Big Brother. He won partly by teaming up with two other contestants early on.

Moss was a student at Arizona State University when he was picked to be on CBS’s U.S. Big Brother. Now, 26, he is a real-estate investor based in Texas and California.

“I can’t complain,” Moss said in a phone interview. He said the show forces regular people to get used to having the camera on all the time.

“It’s 100-per-cent weird,” he said. “You walk in there and there’s 50-plus cameras following your every move. Two in the morning, I’d be walking from the bathroom and there would be cameras following me from the bedroom to the kitchen to the bathroom.”

    The feeling passes, he said.

“But the first day, the first week, it’s surreal to know there’s somebody on the other end of the camera, watching and listening to everything you do.”

“Just go in, be yourself, as vibrant, as energetic as possible. Once you’re in the house, you have to let the game come to you. You can’t go in with a set strategy, it just doesn’t work that way. You have to feel the process out.”

Moss went from being a broke student, at university on a baseball scholarship, to financial independence. “After the show, to get a pretty decent cheque in the mail was a cool thing. I’m a frugal guy, so I still have most of it.”

Meh.... Big Brothers 1 was pretty cool. People just hanging out and chilling.
The subsequent seasons had people acting like d-bags and females dogs to win.
