    Hi,
I am planning to attend Langara for the fall semester. ( arts/sci transfer program. )
I am very nervous and any tips would be nice. How many courses should I take? How should I balance it all out?
Any good teachers/easy courses? Which teacher should I avoid? How much did you pay for your semester at Langara?

I hope I made the right chocie to attend Langara. :S

Any tips would be great. Thank you all in advance.

Don't be nervous! Langara is a great school. you've made the right decision.
Most of the teachers at Langara are pretty good. You can always check rate my professor to find out what others think of the profs.
Do you have any idea what you'd like to major in/ study after you transfer out? Let me know and i'll give you some suggestions.

Agree with Type.B. It's a great school to go to if you're trying to slowly transition into post-secondary. The school's small so you won't get lost lol
You can message me as well if you have any questions. =]

i'm also going to Langara as well, are laptops necessary for classes for note taking or doing assignments?

Depends on what classes you're taking. Most of the time its not necessary. but I used mine anyways because i'm a slow writer.

    Another question:
Would taking 3 classes/semester for 2 years at Langara be enough credits to transfer over to a university? I know I will need a min. of 30 credits to transfer, but I'm still confused over the semester, term, etc kind of thing. (Especially when I think I'm right about one thing, but my friends tell me the opposite) Sorry if I sounded confusing!

Two years is more than enough.
You could take 3 classes first semester (fall), 3 classes second semester (winter), and 4 classes during summer (or any other order) and have your 30 credits completed in one year.

Thanks a lot! :D But what if I wanted to stay in Langara for 2 years? How would I go about doing this?

In that case then just keep taking more classes. check here: Please login or register to view links and make sure you are taking all the classes required before transferring, and also make sure your grades are high so you can easily transfer after your second year.
feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Okay, so I spent awhile planning and checking if the courses were transferable to both UBC and SFU, so far so good. If I were to go to SFU for their Communications program (they only require 24 credits to transfer), it would be fine. As for UBC's Faculty of Arts, clearly, I would need 30 credits in order to make that transfer. Like I said previously, I want to stay in Langara for 2 years, but I think taking the extra courses could potentially be a waste of money? Would it be possible for me to take the "3 classes, 3 classes, and 4 classes" within the span of 2 years at Langara?

Okay. If you really want to stay at Langara for 2 years, then you should aim for completing 60 credits.
Lets use UBC as an example. 30 credits is the minimum number of credits required to transfer. However, you can transfer up to 60 credits if you want.
Normally you complete 30 credits in one year. So if you really want to stay at langara for 2 years, then should should try to complete up to 60 credits.
60 credits= 2 years. That way, when you transfer to UBC, you can start as a 3rd year student.
completing only 30 credits in 2 years is a waste of time. Thats like spending 2 years to complete something that you could finish in 1 year.
And those extra courses are your electives. You will need them so they aren't a waste of money. Just make sure they are transferable.

I really hope I'm making sense. Again, feel free to ask more questions until you are clear about everything.
I wasted a lot of time at Langara because i wasn't sure what I was doing. I want to make sure you don't make the same mistakes as me.

Thanks Type.B! Now, I understand how this works. Hah, I went for an information session 4 days ago, but I left the room more confused than I actually came in. You really cleared things up for me! Thank you soooooo much for your help :)

I signed up for courses a couple days ago but beforehand I planned out what I wanted to take and if it would be a conflict with my other courses but on the day of course sign up, i had to completely change my whole course plan because they were all wait listed by 15 people+ so now, my breaks are completely........... ridiculous.an hour break everyday and for one of the days, following the 1 hour break, i have a 3 hour break also. One of my courses were full so I was left to take a 50 minute class, leaving Mondays ot be only 50 minutes only then Im done school for the day.....

='( how long were your breaks? what did you do during the time?
  15. Type.B Full Member

Yeah unfortunately sometimes you can't get into all the classes that you want. Next time have a backup plan ready.
One hour breaks are not bad at all. Most of my breaks were 4 hours. I either studied, went To the gym, or went shopping at oakridge.
  16. wonderJ Full Member

I have a 1-2 hour break between every class.. is that considered bad? I was thinking I could use that time to review/do homework or something. Also, are labs every week? In that case I would have 3 labs a week and that is freaking ridiculous.

It's gonna suck at first to have that many breaks in between classes, but they'll be more useful as the term progresses. You can do homework/study/take a nap during your breaks. Imo having breaks in between classes forces you to do homework because there's nothing else to do (unless you decide to skip your next class or hang out with friends lol).
