just wanted to say props to all of you who quit a job because you hated it.

lots of ppl are telling me how they are quitting their jobs (without back up plan) because they hate their jobs and need a break. sadly, i cant go through with it =(

I hate mine as well, but I've stuck with it part-time for a few years. I only work one day a week now though.

I'm thinking about doing content writing online (usually around $0.50 to $2 per 100 words, can amount to $10-20 an hour if you try). It might help improve my writing skills and I would get paid at the same time :D

what would you write? do you just help ppl write on their site? great idea btw!

You're given a topic to write about. Someone might be looking for an article to put on their website about flowers or something :p

My SO has the same problem. He hates his job, but cannot quit because he's tied down with a mortgage now. And being so relatively young compared to every body else who has a mortgage, he is under uber stress. Work = stress, owing the bank a third of your home = stress.

Always have a backup plan before you quit.

I don't know how it is for you or anyone else but I just quit my job recently. It wasn't like a career job it was just a regular entry level job. The reason I quit is because of how the managers treated me - I had like at least 8 managers. They were really mean to me, didn't acknowledge my hard work, gave me shitty hours and didn't cross train me anywhere even though I've been there for a while. I really wanted to wait until I secured another job but I just couldn't do it anymore. I shouldn't have to swallow my pride each day I go in there and work shouldn't be that stressful.

So lately I've been applying like crazy to jobs and I actually have an interview tomorrow at Little Burgundy and an invite to drop off my resume at the Aritzia office...I'm not sure I'll go through with Aritzia though because my friend said she got really shit hours based off sales.

Anyways if I were you I would stick with your job just so you'll have income unless you really can't deal with it anymore. :)

I quit my job too because I hated how management was and I wanted to concentrate on school. It was a crap retail job so it's not a big deal. Although, it does suck to not have extra income.

On the other hand, my bf hates his job but he can't quit because he pays for everything (rent, car, food). His parents don't live in Canada anymore so he can't depend on anyone for anything.

Just curious, where in retail did you work?

I recently quit my part-time job without a backup. I'm lucky that I don't have to pay for rent or food, just my tuition and spending money (I'm a light spender too).

I've been working there for more than two years and lately I don't think it's worth it anymore. I anticipate getting off work before the shift even started; I count down from hours to minutes when I'm working. The place usually gets really busy and stressful...

There are no opportunities for advancement and I'm only getting minimum wage (although I know quite a bit about the work place and tasks) so there is no reason to stay.

I've also sacrificed a lot of school activities due to my part time job, so I'd take a break for now. There are many places hiring part times still, so I'm not too worried.

I exchanged time for money, now I'm going to spend a bit money for quality time... haha... :)

Sounds like me.. I started above minimum wage, but after a few years, my total raise has only been less than a dollar and now it's at the new BC minimum wage. I've been asked to advance to "supervisor", but I declined due to some of the supervisors saying it isn't worth it due to stress. They also said it was the exact same pay! :( I think I'll try to figure something out by the end of next month. I guess perhaps one of the reasons I've stayed was due to some of my co-workers, but I suppose there's always Facebook.

the part abt the pay thing sucks but beinga supervisor would look great on your resume. i was once offered a job (above minimum wage at the time) as a sales associate. a couple weeks after i took that job another company offered me supervisor for the same wage. i turned them down thinking that it was a rip off. in retrospect it would have been excellent work experience and would look great on my resume.

but then again, i really enjoyed the first job and worked there for like 3 yrs almost. so im happy that i didnt take it.

sorry for the lack of moral to my story and confusing opinion

I absolutely hated my job and honestly, I just stuck with it until I had a back up plan. I find it really difficult living without a job now since i'm so dependent on my personal income.

But a few good tips, either quit because it's no point wasting your life away doing a job that just makes you miserable, or stick with it until it's hiring seasons (a few months before summer break/ spring break/ christmas- key words a few months BEFORE, as they need to train you, so apply before any big holiday seasons, as that's when they hire the most. so just submit a whole bunch of applications online and in store for jobs you actually feel like you'll enjoy and may the hiring gods be with you).

Wow. I hear you guys man.
That's kinda why I quit starbucks like half a year ago. The amount that I got paid for was not worth it anymore.
But I did secure myself with another job. I'm one of those people if i go unemployed for a period of time i get super scared cause money does drain.
I can't say I'm a big spender but majority of my expenses go towards food considering I still live at home.

Good Luck to you all on looking for another job. At the same time enjoy the time you guys have now. Remember you can't buy back time.

Seems like a lot of people hate their jobs...

I hated my old one (restaurant, horrible management, shitty pay [boss took a good share of tips when they dont do any servicing at all, not right] ) but didnt quit because I couldnt find another job in surrey that was not retail, until now (since im going to UBC, and moving out to Vancouver) AND because I've been used to having cash flowing in from paychecks for 6 years, when the money stops flowing in, the money going out goes a LOT faster.

I really like the jobs i have now, one restaurant, one UBC food court. They all pay the same minimum wage, but thank heavens the management in my current jobs are a LOT better. Sometimes its the environment the work is done in that makes or breaks the whole situation imo.

My bf however is trapped under contract for this company that I swear is going to fall apart within the year. I feel so bad for him, but theres nothing we can do since he's on a contract, and he needs the money to pay for his expenses, AND his parents' =(
