SFU CUPE Strike (Fall 2012)

NOTE: Burnaby campus buses might NOT reach SFU bus stops during full strike. Buses may stop at or near picket line(s), thus commuters will have to walk up the remainder of the way. Picket line may appear anyway on the mountain (i.e. bottom, middle, top).

    Planned Strike Action

NOVEMBER 1 - CUPE has announced there will be a full withdrawal of services on the Burnaby campus on Thursday November 1st, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
NOVEMBER 2 - CUPE has announced there will be a full withdrawal of services on the Surrey campus on Friday November 2nd. Picket times have not been announced.
NOVEMBER 3 and 4 - CUPE has announced there will be a full withdrawal of services at Harbour Centre and the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts on the Vancouver campus. Picket times have not been announced.
The University will remain open; however some operations and scheduled classes may be impacted. We will maintain this page to provide as much specific information as possible.

    Crossing a Picket Line
As the University will remain operational, you may need to cross a picket line to attend classes or other activities on campus. It is important to note that picketers can be in an emotional state and may act out of character. You may be nervous about crossing the picket line, so remember to remain calm and take extra care to avoid confrontation.
    When crossing the picket line:
    • Proceed carefully - do not rush.
    • Be prepared to identify yourself.
    • Do not become embroiled in discussion.
    • Do not antagonize.
    • Do not respond to threats or taunts.
    • Do not cross the line more often than necessary.
    • If confronted, please identify why you are accessing the University (e.g., as a student to attend class or study in the library, as a faculty member conducting research or teaching, or as a staff member going to work).
You are not required to stop to explain why you are crossing the line; however, if explaining seems less confrontational, do so without unduly delaying yourself.

    Class Cancellation
Any students with classes scheduled for that time should check the Please login or register to view links to determine if your classes are listed as cancelled. If your class is not mentioned on the site you should check with your instructor to determine if the class will be held.

    Exams
Students who choose not to cross the picket line and miss a scheduled exam as a result must do two things:
    1. they are responsible for letting the instructor know directly and immediately; AND,
    2. they must notify the Chair or the Registrar in writing within 96 hours of the time scheduled for the exam.

all i have to say is.. at least UBC has it a little better? the TAs right now are on limited strike last time i heard.. sucks for everyone at SFU since the best place i think to disrupt service is anywhere on the mountain so the busses can't move...
  3. momentai (1) Elite Member New Trader

UBC TAs can stand in the middle of the road and block buses too ... the fact that its a mountain means a better workout for the commuters.

btw UBC CUPE served notice to start rotating strikes monday (well tuesday actually).

What a mess. I'm not looking forward to crossing the picket line on Friday -_-

they could, but so far they said they are making efforts to not disrupt students (because yenno it's not our fault or anything). yesterday they picked around one of the towers but it was where most of the prof's offices were, so really didn't disrupt people from going to class. i guess the biggest difference is that it seems like different unions at UBC went on strikes at different times... whereas it seems like at SFU everyone is going. is it safe to assume that these are TAs/food services/security etc?

Some TAs are also professors, and SFU tweeted that dining services MAY be disrupted by the strike. If this situation continues, SFU students won't receive their final grades for whatever courses they're taking this semester until everything is resolved.

Services that may be impacted by job action or a full strike include, but are not limited to: academic advising, career services, health and counselling, recreation, the bookstore, child care, processing of student scholarships, bursaries and financial aid, secretarial and clerical services, computer and other technical support. Food services will also be impacted (see below). Please check the labour update website regularly for additional information. It can be found Please login or register to view links.
There are some services that must remain available in the event of job action or a full strike as confirmed in an Order from the Labour Relations Board. These services are very limited and include:
    • Emergency counselling services to those individuals who have issues that must be addressed.
    • Access to the manager of the Centre for Students with a Disability.
    • Health Services as needed to provide emergency support for critical student issues.
    • Reduced hours and staffing in Student Services may occur.

Best to double check with your prof/TA though
