"Skipping" in college with prof approval?

Discussion in 'Schools' started by wonderJ, Jul 25, 2012.

Kind of a dumb question but I was wondering if it is possible to have a prof's approval skipping an entire lecture for a lab?(Hopefully there isn't a lab every week)

    Other info:
    - One of my calculus lectures is at the same time as my bio lab and I can't really change this without changing my whole schedule. I don't want to change my whole schedule because at langara right now, every course is full.

    - I already took AP calculus in high school with an overall of 80% (I didn't take the AP exam) so I am familiar with most concepts

Any information/advice about this would be helpful, thanks in advance!

I doubt the prof will really care. It will be up to you to learn the material, you might want to make a friend in the class that you can get the notes off of

I'm surprised you were able to register your timetable with clashing class times. When I was at UBC we couldn't register until we made a timetable without conflicts.

Anyway, if you really need to skip, I doubt the professor really cares if you ask or not. He might not even know who's there and who's not (unless it's a super small class). At the end of the day, the professor is no longer responsible for you learning the material, he's just there to deliver it. If you skip the class and you have someone to get notes for you and you're able to pass the exams in the end, I guess it doesn't really matter :)

im surprised you were able to enroll in both! as others said, prof does not care who goes or who doesn't go. skip at your own will

I wasn't able to enroll in both, my bad for stating that. I'm registered in math but I was on the waiting list for 3 other bio classes. One of the classes gave me an offer yesterday and I really want to take it because the other two classes are TBA. To actually register in that class I would have to talk to the prof about it, get a note etc and bring it back to the registration's office. I was just wondering if it's possible since I'm desperate to get into bio.

Some profs take attendance which counts for participation marks. You need to email the prof. They're the only ones that can tell you what you need to know.

What about exams? What if exams are during class... :S

what about pop quizzes, scheduled quizzes, and in-class midterms? It's really risky.
Also I did AP Calc in high school and did fairly okay, but I still got owned in post-sec calc.

if your bio instructor teaches more than one section maybe you can ask them if you could come in during another lab time. i've seen some people do that. if you skip a class of calculus then you might miss a quiz or a midterm or something.

Change your schedule then. How well you do in high school =/= how well you do in university.

Well I was thinking that maybe labs weren't every week and maybe I could reschedule a quizz if it happened to be on the same day as my lab. I've done some thinking and it would be quite complicated if math and bio conflicted so I guess the best choice is to wait for another bio class to open. Changing my schedule would put me on the waitlist for everything and I can't risk not getting into a single class.

    Thanks everybody for your replies!
