Tablet for School?

I'm thinking of getting a tablet for school. I want to know what tablets you guys have and do you use it for school? If you do, how do you like it?

PS: I'm looking for an Android, but I would love to hear about your iPads and other OS devices too.

I'm also looking to get a tablet for school. Right now we have an Asus Transformer, i wanted to get a Transformer Prime or Transformer Infinity but now i'm not so sure since i just don't like Android.... leaning more towards an iPad at the moment but would love to hear other people's opinions.

    iPad 2

    Pros:
    - nice design
    - huge market for cases and accessories
    - high quality construction (compared with the playbook)
    - great battery life (seriously I leave it on for days and it's still good)
    - app store (especially good if you like playing games)

    Cons:
    - no flash
    - may be too big/heavy (depending on the person)
    - no external memory
    - high price point

A small part of me does regret not getting the android because they have flash. While it would be awesome if the ipad had flash support, I honestly don't think I would use flash on the ipad as much as I do on my phone. When I watch stuff on my bed, I usually hold up my phone above my head and holding up the ipad would be too much (and I drop the phone on my head sometimes so yea....).

I do think the ipad is super useful for school (especially now that I've gotten the portable keyboard), because of it's larger size. Some people think the size is too big and it defeats the purpose of a tablet though... However, Apple's addressing that by releasing a 7" tablet. I personally think the larger size is better, because it's easier and it looks nicer when you're looking at powerpoints and word processing. Also, even though I'm taking a keyboard and the ipad to school I find it's more convenient than taking a laptop (ex. faster to turn on/off).

I think for a lot of people, the iPad is used as a fashion accessory too. If you're into designer accessories, there's a bigger market for it with the iPad. For example, Rebecca Minkoff makes an ipad exclusive version of their MAC bag.

That's all I can think of for now =D

I bought a Blackberry Playbook :) but I bought it to read books lol not so much using it for school. I mainly take notes via notebook and pen (most of my profs post slides so I print them) I've read too many studies on how if you write more, the more you retain than typing. I bring my playbook around just to waste time or sometimes I forget to print the slides, I just refer to them via playbook then write on paper.

For papers, I bring my macbook to school...BUT if I was to get a tablet, I would get this ASUS Transformer Prime Eee Pad one lol.
I'm looking into getting a tablet for actual schoolwork, so far I think this ASUS one is good. It's a laptop where you can remove the keyboard :) It's also running on android.

My mom has the iPad 3 and I think it's great, I wouldn't bring it to school but that's just me. (For what it is, it is overpriced
-I think it's great to type with when you attach a keyboard but most of my classes are Chemistry classes so we're writing reactions and text at the same time so I prefer pen and paper. I don't find that flash is a big problem for me, I didn't even know I was missing flash until my cousin whined that he can't watch anime on his iPad.

OR get the Samsung Galaxy Tab LOL, the fact that Apple had to go through a lawsuit to get it banned from the U.S. is hilarious and kinda implies that it was a close competitor lol.

I haven't tried any other tablets but the iPad isn't too convenient. if your class doesn't require taking lots of notes and you just need to search a few things i think it'll work but typing massive amount of notes is really slow compared to laptop (i guess this is a given but i never thought of it....)
i would get a keyboard for it but it just defeats my purpose of using an iPad (it's lighter than macbook)
I'll probably end up bringing macbook most of the time and iPad when i only have like 1 class that doesn't require taking detailed notes

the prime is sort of outdated and not what its currently selling for. im looking at getting the infinity, but not sure if i want to dish out $600 for it. but it is top of the line and comes with a keyboard.

i took a survey online last night, and it suggested i get the sony tablet s. the design is awesome and its actually pretty good to hold and use, but the price tag and dated specs is definitely a downer. i also tried typing on it and it was impossible.

conclusion: thinking abt the infinity but not sure abt the price tag.

thanks for the super detailed review!!!

im surprised you got a playbook since i always took you for an apple girl. but i definitely agree with the transformer.

**Sorry if this comes off as a little rude...
I admit I love my Apple products but I'm sorry to burst your bubble that I'm not that person who just buys an Apple product because it's the hot new thing and could care less about specs. I'm open to Android phones too not just the iPhone but if it sucks, then it sucks lol. I buy my Apple products, I love them and I think they're great but that doesn't mean I'm only buying them as an accessory. I still think their touch is great, as for the Blackberry Playbook, I originally wanted a Kindle Touch, then I decided I wanted to read in colour so I leaned towards the Kobo Vox but after reading reviews. For the same $200 ish, I can be getting the Blackberry Playbook which was loading faster. Like I said, I use my playbook for playing Angry Birds and reading my Kobo Books lol. I needed something I can hold in one hand so the iPad didn't fulfill that requirement.

Also cause Blackberry is Canadian so that kinda added to it by 0.01% of why I bought it lol.

i didnt find it rude at all ... is the playbook 7inches? im thinking of getting the nexus 7 and buying a keyboard for it, but i think 7inches is a bit small.
  9. ELLE (8) Elite Member Known Trader

Skip ramble lol and scroll to bottom-
Yup it's 7 inches, that's what I thought before but I guess it's cause I mainly use it for reading..it's the right side. I was too lazy to print the slides in class so I just grabbed my playbook and left the house and it's the perfect size. Anything smaller than 7 inches is small but this is the right size to do little stuff.

It's big enough kind of like on your phone when you like to zoom in and out. For the price that it's at 32GB=$249.99, 64GB=$299.99, it's really worth the bang of the buck. Great build and durable for something this price, for the same price you can get an eReader like Kobo Vox or Kindle Fire which does extra stuff like emails, surf the web, same 7 inches but they suck.

I suggest watching some tutorials on Youtube of how it works then going into Future Shop and playing with it, if you go to the stores to play with it first. You might not get the hang or know the tiny tricks and you'll get frustrated (I did lol) but my friend was really gung ho on it being the tablet I needed.

I think jchuu could say more about it since he has his way before I did.

Things I like: (not sure if they're pros or not lol)
    -Has flash
-Can open microsoft word, excel, powerpoint and can make them
-7 inches, can be held in hand
-Font size bigger than your textbook and normal sized novels so that's a pro, does not pixelate
-Smooth touch flow, very responsive but not super sensitive where you're thinking WTF I DIDN'T EVEN CLICK THAT
-Super easy to use if you can operate a phone
-Can put movies on it via usb and ta-da, watch it with its pre-installed app "Videos"
-Lock screen, great for reading, prevents the screen from changing directions when you move your tablet around

    Things I don't like:
-Y CAMERA NO WORK AT NIGHT :( that's it lol
-Slow start up, I leave it on standby and only shut it down at night now. "Takes a minute to start up.."

    --------------------------
Yeah 7 inches is alright, my mom who insists that I get the biggest iMac possible or my eyesight will be bad, the same person who insists that I ZOOM IN on everything thinks it's alright LOL. I don't like the thought of bringing a keyboard around for something small, I really think you should just use your laptop less and get the ASUS.
  10. momentai (1) Elite Member New Trader

i really appreciate your review and i actually like the playbook (since its the underdog), but i dont think its worth it considering whats going on with RIM.

when you say i should use my laptop less, do you mean that i should take the ASUS to school and use the laptop at home?

i was telling my coworker abt this and he thinks this is the prime example of a first world problem and a capitalist scam. i started out wanting a $200 nexus 7 and a $50 keyboard and now im at a $600 tablet and keyboard.

anyways, i like your idea of watching videos and testing it at the store. i will definitely do that when the infinity comes out.

    thanks!!!
  11. ELLE (8) Elite Member Known Trader

Yeah, I forgot who posted but I remember telling them that they had a firstworldproblem lol. Yup, exactly. In that way you can justify for your spending lol hahah

I know it's unfortunate but I'm really hoping they get back. It's kind of like how Apple struggled for years then just in the past 2-3 years, Apple is ta-da! I bought the playbook because I wanted an eReader and because it was Canadian :)
  12. momentai (1) Elite Member New Trader

im not a RIM person, im hoping nokia makes a come back. i also hope windows phone would catch on. personally i wouldnt buy a WP, but i still like to see it thrive.

    but way to support canadian!

not sure if this was mentioned but when you go on webct and you open pdf's, you can only view the first page and a half cause it can't scroll past it lol, super irritating

^ i really hate the power button for the playbook LOL
  18. momentai (1) Elite Member New Trader

you really want me to get the playbook lol

    why?
  19. noah Member

^The power button is tiny and flush with the side so it's hard to press. The only time you need to use it is when you're turning the device on from a full power down so it's a non-issue IMO.

i think if i was to go for a transformer i wouldnt go for the infinity. probably get the pad (TF300) since its the mid-range one. i dont need the super graphics and super camera of the infinity, but i heard the pads metal body might cause wifi problems ...
