Since we have a few members that attend UBC, the best university in western Canada, I thought i would start a thread for people to ask questions about admissions, campus life, events, or anything else that might help a first year student make their life easier and more enjoyable! :D

    Waiting for your awesome replies!

They usually host two tour days. I'm not exactly sure when the 2nd one is (maybe it already happened?)
-Beta Fiesta coming up on the 24th, (and other parties on wednesdays & fridays)
    -White rush on 22nd
-and of course, pit nights on wednesdays if you're legal :)

    :) no probs.
you can still join sororities after their whole initiation process is done.
i know a girl who went through interviews and got into kappa alpha theta (i think that's what they're called)
and also, AOPi is colonizing as well. Their open house day 27th at 6pm at their chapter room
and Phrateres is recruiting during their club days on 22nd-24th

Not exactly sure how she did it (I've only met her once) but she had a friend in that sorority so she got to talk to the president, got an interview & got in. Apparently her friend got rejected though LOL.
the popular ones usually meet their quota on bid day. Usually not all the pledges join at the end (formal initiation day) and there are spots left over (initiation days differ depending on the sorority). Then you talk to the president and discuss your options :)
well that's how it works for the one I was goin to join (which I didn't at the end haha) so I can't guarantee my information is 100% correct. Anyways good luck ^^

Club Days this year are on September 22-24 in the SUB! Great opportunity to check out all the clubs UBC has to offer and it's a great way to meet new people

I thought I'd add, since first years may not know, if you still haven't bought your textbooks yet, make sure you check out the Discount Bookstore located upstairs in the UBC Village. Texts there are a few dollars cheaper compared to the UBC bookstore and they tend to have most books for common first year courses (math, biology, chemistry, english, etc..). Books are exactly the same, just cheaper!

    Some tips for first years:
-linguistic 100: think mark depends on the TA you have. I did an assignment with a friend and we had exact same answers (but different tutorial) I got 50% he got 96% WTF. I switched to his class and I did so much better.
-for English 110 dr. Gooch: only book I actually bought was Modern Stories. You can find the Hard Times, Othello and other books on Google Books. <3 google!
-do the psyc extra credits (your profs probably mentioned it already on the first day). It helps A LOT.

Think that's all I can think of at the moment
oh and get cookies from blue chips @ the sub :$ so yummy

    Event:

UBC CVC ski trip 2011. I know they have a massive ski trip to Kelowna's Big White every year and it's totally fun :D Be sure to check with the cvc (chinese varsity club) club for details!

I found most of those trip disappointing. I went to two of them about 5-6 years ago and while one was alright, the 2nd one was terrible.
My first trip, my buddies and I had to share a small hotel room together. 4 guys and 2 beds.... lets just say I found the couch quite comfortable, lol. It was nearby downtown Kelowna, so you had to wake up early to take the bus ride up the mountain. The good part was that most restaurants and stuff were within walking distance.

2nd trip, it was a nightmare. It was 6-7 people in a "2 bedroom" apartment up in the mountain. We gave a couple the master bedroom, so that left us 1 utility room which had a bunk bed designed for folks under 4'5. My friend found it cramp even though he's about 5'5.... but at least he wasn't like the other guy who was like 6'0 who had to sleep sitting up, lol. Another of my friend took the futon, and I had to settle for pushing all the kitchen chairs along the walls to sleep on. The bright side was that I actually had a blanket and pillow unlike my friend on the futon, hahaha.
A mini-80 and a Nintendo with duck-hunt rounded out the amenity for the place. While it was up on Big White, it took like 15 mins to walk to the ski hills.
All the crummy accommodation wasn't the worst part of the trip, it was finding out what type of place other people got (even though we all paid the same amount). Another friend of mine got a place right beside the ski lifts, with a sauna, karaoke machine, huge tv, a bed for all 7 people, and it was co-ed with lots of single girls.... while I had to settle with a sausage-fest with my childhood buddies, sleeping on kitchen chairs.... The bright side was that we were still able to watch the Canucks vs Flames game that night... OT winner from a Salo one-timer with Bertuzzi screening after an identical goal was disallowed.

That was the last ski trip my friends and I went to, lol. We were so pissed.... even after all this time, we met up with one of the organizers from the trip and he still apologized, lol.

    /rant

Of course, don't let this stop you from going, maybe the planning has gotten better since.

I recommend looking into work study jobs!
you work on campus and they work around your school schedule
not to mention, you only work max 10 hrs a week AND they usually pay quite well :)

google ubc work study for more info + the job postings available

^Book the rooms for ski trip early if you want a condo, they get full FAST!

Also, a major part of my pre-exam ritual is to grab a cookie from Blue Chip Cookies to enjoy during the exam. These magical treats yield great results, I promise! Scout's Honor

    Whoa, bagel addiction!

That's great to hear. Are the snacks working well for you? I remember my psyc prof having the most boring monotone voice ever, so I felt GREAT writing a midterm in that class without having to hear his voice.

I'm not really a sweets person either, but it doesn't really matter to me after pairing it with a strong coffee. Besides, the cookie itself is warm, crispy, and has a nice fluffy texture on the inside which makes it so good. Have you tried any of them? Guess which one's my special cookie =P

To anyone having trouble finding seats @ SUB during rush hour: Try going into the Pit with your food because it *might* be easier finding a seat there.

^Wow, you got me on first guess LOL. The white chocolate w/ macadamia nuts AKA Brazil Crunch is definitely my fav of them all. They're quite sweet, but not as cloyingly sweet as the krispy kremes they're selling on campus right now (I can only handle one of those).

I'm allergic so I can't eat any of the nut cookies at Blue Chip. My favourites are the Marbelous, Ranger, and Cranberry Oat. SOOOO GOOD.

dear UBC, i dislike the fact that students are not allowed to self report their online course marks AND you will not even look at them until may. i don't see the logic there. /endrant
